In the south of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt lies the residential city of Zeitz. The city was one of the most important cities in the Duchy of Saxony-Zeitz from 1652 to 1718 and Moritzburg Castle served as the residence of Moritz of Saxony-Zeitz.
Zeitz is better known, however, as an industrial location. It was once an important railway junction in the region, which promoted industrialisation. For many years, for example, Zeitz manufactured prams (which were used all over Germany) and produced sugar. Lignite mining shaped the region from around 1830. Today, a structural change is taking place here that is shaping the entire region.
The city is unjustly in a “Sleeping Beauty slumber”. Great initiatives and projects are in the process of bringing life back to the city. Visitors can look forward to a city in transition with much to discover.
What to do in Zeitz – Excursion tips Zeitz
There's nothing going on in Zeitz… only old people live there… where is Zeitz, I've never heard of it…We have often heard these and other prejudices when we have reported enthusiastically about the town in Saxony-Anhalt. Of course Zeitz is struggling.
Even on our first visit, we really wanted to explore Zeitz underground. Unfortunately, it didn't work out then due to time constraints, but on our second visit we were able to take part in a guided tour.
Zeitz has a really interesting industrial culture that you should definitely discover. We took a look around the former Herrmannschacht briquette factory. A really exciting excursion to the oldest preserved briquette factory of the first generation!
In the south of Saxony-Anhalt in the Burgenlandkreis district only about 25 kilometres north of Gera lies the city of Zeitz. We spent a day in the city and discovered a lot. Follow us on a little tour through Zeitz.
Yes, the Moritzburg is also in Zeitz! The Moritzburg Castle in Zeitz in Saxony-Anhalt is often confused with the Moritzburg in Saxony. Yet the castle in Zeitz is unique and really worth seeing. It is definitely worth a visit, especially if you take some time to explore the castle grounds at your leisure.
