The county seat, Timișoara (Temeswar), was the European Capital of Culture in 2023. The city is known for its magnificent architecture, which bears a strong influence from the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As you stroll through the old town, opulent Baroque buildings alternate with whimsical Art Nouveau facades.
Timișoara is also the city where Europe’s first electric street lighting was installed (1884) and the site where the Romanian Revolution against the Ceaușescu regime began in 1989. Today, it boasts a vibrant café culture, countless parks along the Bega Canal, and a relaxed, student-friendly atmosphere.
As soon as you leave the city, Timiș reveals its tranquil side. The landscape is expansive and ideal for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle. Of particular note is Lake Surduc (Lacul Surduc) in the eastern part of the county. It is the largest body of standing water in the region and a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, anglers, and nature lovers. The dense forests surrounding the lake are perfect for long hikes or bike rides. In the northwest of the county lies the Mureș Floodplain Nature Park (Lunca Mureșului). Here, you can paddle a canoe through pristine floodplain forests and observe a vast variety of waterfowl.
The historic region where Timiș is located is also known as BANAT. It is a melting pot of cultures. For centuries, Romanians, Swabians, Hungarians, and Serbs have lived here in peace. This is also reflected in the regional cuisine, which is hearty, diverse, and unique. Timiș County is also a fantastic destination for wine lovers. Just about 25 kilometers from Timișoara lies Cramele Recaș, Romania’s largest and most famous winery. A wine tasting right on the estate, paired with traditional dishes, is an absolute highlight of any trip there.

The Romanian European Capital of Culture for 2023 is moving closer to Germany. I was on board the premiere flight of the new Wizz Air direct connection from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) to Timișoara. This journey began early and ended with a good dose of tradition.

How to Get There
By Plane
Timișoara “Traian Vuia” International Airport (TSR) is very well connected. Airlines such as Lufthansa, Wizz Air, and Ryanair offer direct flights from many German-speaking and European cities. The trip from the airport to the city center takes only about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi, ride-hailing app (Uber/Bolt), or express bus (Line E4).
By Train
There are direct EuroCity and some night train connections from Vienna via Budapest directly to Timișoara Nord Central Station.
By car
The Hungarian M43 (coming from Szeged) merges directly into the Romanian A1 highway at the Nădlac border crossing, which leads to Timișoara.

In Timișoara (Public Transportation & Bicycle)
The capital is a delight to explore without a car. The network of trams, buses, and trolleybuses is extensive.
Special feature: Timișoara is the only city in Romania with public water transportation. Small boats (“Vaporetto”) regularly ply the Bega Canal.
Intercity (Rental Car)
A rental car is highly recommended for flexible visits to natural attractions such as Lake Surduc, the vineyards of Recaș, or the Mureș Nature Park.

Spring (March, April, May)
Spring often starts out changeable and cool in March. Temperatures then rise to a very pleasant 15 to 25 degrees. During this season, you can expect an average of 7 to 9 rainy days per month, with May often being the wettest spring month due to increased showers.
Summer (June, July, August)
It gets really hot in Banat during the summer months. In July and August, the thermometer frequently climbs well above the 30-degree mark. June, with an average of 9 to 10 rainy days, is often marked by heavy but brief summer thunderstorms. In midsummer (July and August), it becomes significantly drier; here, precipitation falls on an average of only 6 to 7 days per month.
Fall (September, October, November)
September and October, with mild temperatures between 15 and 23 degrees, offer ideal conditions for hiking and wine tastings at estates like Cramele Recaș. In November, it cools down noticeably (often to single-digit temperatures above freezing) and becomes increasingly foggy and gray. Precipitation is quite low in early fall; over the entire season, there are an average of 5 to 8 rainy days per month.
Winter (December, January, February)
Winters in western Romania are generally cold, with temperatures often hovering around freezing and dropping well below zero at night. January and February are classic months for frost. Precipitation, whether as cold rain or snow, falls on an average of 6 to 8 days per month during the winter months
