South America

South America, the fourth-largest continent on Earth, offers an unparalleled variety of landscapes, cultures, and adventures. Discover the dense, green expanses of the Amazon rainforest, the majestic peaks of the Andes, or the icy glaciers of Patagonia; this continent captivates every traveler.

South America covers an area of around 17.84 million square kilometers and encompasses fascinating countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and numerous other states, all of which possess their very own charm.

Natural Landscapes

In terms of natural landscapes, South America is a continent of extremes. In the west rise the Andes, the longest mountain range in the world. Here, a true paradise for hikers, mountaineers, and nature lovers can be found. In the heart of the continent lies the Amazon Basin, the largest contiguous rainforest area on Earth. Desert lovers will find an almost extraterrestrial landscape in the extremely dry Atacama Desert in Chile, while in the deep south, in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, harsh winds, rugged fjords, and massive glaciers dominate the scenery.

Cultural Diversity

South America is a melting pot of cultures. The indigenous peoples have left behind a rich heritage. Foremost among them is the impressive Inca civilization, whose traces can still be admired in Peru today. At the same time, the culture is strongly shaped by European (especially Spanish and Portuguese) influences as well as African traditions. This unique mixture is reflected in pure joie de vivre, in music and dance styles like the tango in Argentina or the samba in Brazil, and not least in an incredibly diverse cuisine.

Adventures and Activities

South America is an absolute dream destination for adventurers and explorers. Whether a multi-day hike, observing the unique wildlife on the Galapagos Islands, or an expedition into the deep jungle, the possibilities are virtually endless. For city travelers, there are metropolises like Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Lima, or Santiago de Chile to discover. These cities entice with historic colonial-style old towns, outstanding architecture, excellent gastronomy, and an exciting nightlife.

Climate and Travel

Time The climate in South America is as diverse as the continent itself. The equator cuts through the north of the continent. In Brazil or Colombia, a tropical climate prevails year-round. In the high-altitude Andean regions, one finds an alpine climate, and in the far south towards Antarctica, it is subpolar and cold.
