Cooking for yourself or visiting a restaurant in Jerez and experiencing the typical flavors of the region. We had enough time in Jerez to try both options. We not only discovered the best churros, but also some restaurants in Jerez that we really liked.
Mercado Central de Abastos
For holidaymakers staying in a vacation apartment in Jerez, the city’s central market is the perfect place to shop. The large market hall and small stalls around the building sell fresh produce.
We stocked up on fruit and vegetables here and strolled past the large stalls selling fresh fish. For us as city dwellers with “only” supermarkets nearby, this is always an experience! Buying fresh fish is always a highlight for us on vacation and we really enjoy it.
It’s best to visit the market in the morning, the later it gets, the more stalls are closed!

Cervecería gorila
We arrived in Jerez on a Sunday in pouring rain and a storm. The fridge in the apartment was empty, so we tried to find a restaurant in the city. It wasn’t easy. Many restaurants in Jerez had closed due to the weather conditions or were just trying to protect their outdoor seating and dragged everything into the small indoor rooms. Nobody really thought about cooking.
We decided to go to one of the few open “pubs” in the hope of getting something to eat. Let’s just say that hunger and beer washed the food down. It came from a huge freezer and luckily you can’t go too far wrong with potatoes with dip when the microwave defrosts and the deep fryer does the rest.
The beer, a 1906 – Red Vintage, was good. The culinary debut in Jerez was not, due to the situation.

Empanadas Malvón
The next day, however, the experience of the first day was quickly forgotten. We discovered a small store where we found the best and most varied empanadas.
There were around 15 different varieties to choose from. Each variety was filled with something different, for example cheese, tuna, meat, vegetables, Thai…
We decided to take the empanadas with us cold and heat them up in the apartment. However, it is also possible to buy warm empanadas and enjoy them on the spot.
They tasted great to us!

El gallo Azul
One of the most striking buildings in the pedestrian zone is a semi-circular building with a large advertisement on the roof. One of the more expensive restaurants in Jerez is located here. Especially at lunchtime, there were always lots of people sitting here enjoying the food.
We took a look inside the building and realized that it is a beautiful location. You can sit very comfortably on the second floor and have a great view of the street from the window seats or the small balcony.

Restaurants in Jerez: Casa Gabriela
One of our favorite places is Plaza Plateros. There are countless restaurants, bars and cafés here. At the Casa Gabriela restaurant, we looked for a seat outside and watched the hustle and bustle on the square.
The restaurant offers excellent food and the choice was not easy. I simply ordered two starters and tried two different flavors. On the one hand, I opted for a meat dish that wasn’t the best looking, but the taste was completely convincing. However, I found the fish croquette on risotto even better. Great flavor and very good! Patrick opted for a burger. He was particularly impressed by the sauce on the burger.

Tabanco Plaza Plateros
After dinner, we moved just a few chairs away to the Tabanco Plaza Plateros. Here we enjoyed a good sherry and rounded off the evening.

Heladeria Margarita La Fresca Jerez
Fancy an ice cream? The prices for ice cream are surprisingly high throughout the region and you don’t often see someone with an ice cream on the street. We discovered an ice cream parlor in the pedestrian zone.
They make their own ice cream here. It had a good consistency and was tastier than we had experienced in an ice cream parlor for a long time. Good thing we tried it!

Chiri’s Corner – El Rincón del Chiri
Our tip for lunchtime – look for one of the many restaurants in Jerez with a special lunch offer! We discovered a few restaurants with special lunchtime offers and were amazed at how reasonably priced the food was. We had to try them out.
Not far from our apartment, we discovered the offer: starter + main course + 1 drink for €10. We eagerly took a seat and hoped to have the Spanish handwritten menu explained to us. Unfortunately, they really only spoke Spanish here and so we simply chose 2 starters and 2 main courses at random. It’s exciting when you have no idea what will be served…
First came olives and bread, which we hadn’t ordered, but which didn’t cost extra. Then came the starters, which would have been enough for us in terms of quantity. We chose a seafood salad and a hearty white bean soup. The salad was made with fresh seafood and had very little seasoning, the pure taste was wonderful. The bean soup was wonderful home cooking, just like at home.
This was followed by the main course, where we would have blindly chosen grilled sardines, which tasted wonderful. The second dish was a meat dish with chips and an outstanding sauce.
It was a great meal and we were not disappointed on a second visit when we had a hearty stew, for example.

Restaurants in Jerez in the pedestrian zone
When we asked what we absolutely had to eat in Jerez, we were told oxtail. We found it in one of the many restaurants in the pedestrian zone and were able to order the dish. The meat was good, but the sauce was better.
To be honest, I had only decided on kidneys because of the sherry sauce and without giving it a second thought. It was only when the food arrived that I realized I had ordered kidneys. Once you’ve caught your breath and you have to try the unknown – I did. The kidneys had an unexpectedly firm texture and were very tasty. The sherry sauce was excellent and after the initial “shock” I was very happy to have chosen this dish. It was great!
Los Dos Deditos cervecería internacional
In addition to all the sherry, we also enjoyed a beer and discovered a pub that we really liked.
Whether inside or outside, it was very pleasant to sit here and enjoy the evening. There is a large selection of national and international beers on offer. Some varieties are available freshly tapped, others are offered from the bottle. If you like, you will also find a small selection of food here.

Churros Plaza De Jerez
There is a pavilion on the square in front of the central market. This is the Churros Plaza of Jerez, where you can get freshly prepared churros in the morning.
Churros are a popular Spanish pastry that is traditionally eaten for breakfast. They are deep-fried pastries sprinkled with sugar and sometimes cinnamon. Dipping them in hot chocolate is also very popular.
Before we bought a portion, I watched a bit of the production. The finished batter was already in a large bowl and was poured in portions into a piping bag over a large deep fryer. You press the batter through a star-shaped nozzle into the hot fat and allow it to turn golden brown. The finished dough curl is then removed with tongs and sold in portions.
Here, the hot pastries were sold by weight and without sugar, cinnamon or chocolate. We enjoyed it plain!
I was very surprised that some customers sat down with their portion in the neighboring café. They ordered hot chocolate and were then allowed to eat their churros on the spot. Especially in the morning, all the seats in the café were taken and the Spaniards enjoyed their churros breakfast.
