La Línea de la Concepción
La Línea is primarily a transit station for journeys to Gibraltar; there are hardly any tourist attractions. It is much cheaper to stay overnight in Spain and discover Gibralta from there, especially for longer stays.
As the name suggests, the front line between British-occupied Gibraltar and Spain was located here for a long time. La Línea was a fairly small village that developed due to the settlement of the military. It has been an independent municipality since 1870.
Today, La Línea de la Concepción is more of a “residential town” for the people who work in Gibralta. Rents are cheaper and the daily border crossing is no problem. Only at peak times do you have to allow a little time.
There is a compact old town centre around the church, town hall and Mercado de la Concepción market hall. Here you can buy fresh local produce and typical Spanish delicacies. The heart of the city with many cafés and restaurants is the Plaza de la Constitución, perfect for savouring the local atmosphere.
An insider tip for art lovers is the Museo Cruz Herrera. Dedicated to the La Línea-born painter José Cruz Herrera, this museum displays a collection of his works as well as contemporary art exhibitions.
Not far from the city you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. Relax on the beach of Santa Barbara and enjoy the warm sun and crystal-clear water. Water sports enthusiasts will also get their money’s worth here, with everything from windsurfing to diving courses on offer.
And of course, the famous Rock of Gibraltar is not to be missed. A short drive will take you to this iconic landmark, where you can enjoy breathtaking views and maybe even see the famous Barbary apes.
