In search of a good craft beer in Málaga, we came across the local microbrewery La Fábrica de Cruzcampo in Soho. A place that beer lovers should visit.
The brewery has two entrances, from two different streets. On our first visit we stayed outside under an uninviting canopy. Only on our second visit did we go inside the brewery, a much better decision.
A large bar with a tap, brew kettles and differently styled seating areas await visitors to La Fábrica. Those who want to eat something can take a seat at tables. Those who just want to drink a craft beer in Málaga can find space in cosy seating areas or at bar tables. The interior is quite large and fills up very quickly in the early afternoon. So if you come in a larger group, you should definitely make a reservation.
The beer brand Cruzcampo has been around since 1904. The brothers Roberto and Tomás Osborne wanted to develop a beer that would be ideal for the warm climate in Spain. In their search for the ideal water, which should resemble the water in Pilsen in the Czech Republic, the brothers were drawn to Seville. The yeast used makes a beer unique and the brothers found a yeast strain that gives their beer a gentle bitterness and a fruity, herbal aroma. Cruzcampo beer is brewed unpasteurised and chilled. This allows the beer to be served at -2º degrees. At the same time, the beer has relatively little foam. The first Cruzcampo beer was created and the beer is still brewed according to this recipe today.
The small brewery in Soho produces craft beer that is still inspired by the innovative spirit of the founders and fits perfectly with the lifestyle in the artists’ quarter of Soho. Up to 30 different types of beer are brewed here every year. Each beer is unique in its combination of hops and malt, and some beers contain “crazy” ingredients such as seawater or plankton.
When we visited, the brewer was on site and opened one of the brewing kettles to clean it. Immediately, the smell of mash permeated the room. It was wonderful for me, because on the one hand I was able to have a short conversation with the brewer and look over his shoulder. On the other hand, I just love the smell.
Craft Beer in Málaga
As a rule, you can always drink up to 9 different own beers during your visit to La Fábrica. During our visit, there were 7 different beers on tap.
We started with a lager, the Cruzcampo ARRECIA. A good slightly bitter beer with 5% alcohol content. The beer is fermented quite cold to extend the fermentation time. This preserves the aromas better.
The Cruzcampo DUENDE, an IPA with 5% alcohol content, is refreshing and a little bitter. It tastes like a typical IPA, was good but not unusual.
Patrick then chose the Cruzcampo SEMBRA, a banana wheat beer with 5.5% alcohol. I found it super tasty and refreshing. Just right for the south and the warm weather.
Cruzcampo RELIÁ a Fruity Ale was the second beer I tried during our first visit. So far, I have not often experienced that a beer really tastes exactly as it is called – namely fruity. With an alcohol content of 4%, it is quite light and fits perfectly into the summer.
On our second visit, I opted for a tasting board with 4 different freshly tapped beers. I was allowed to choose which craft beer in Málaga I wanted to try.
I chose the Cruzcampo RELIÁ, which I had enjoyed so much on our first visit. I also chose the Cruzcampo MALAGUETA (APA), named after the city’s main beach and bullring. At 4.7%, the beer has a fairly low alcohol content, is light and tastes very aromatic. Even though I am often disappointed by 0% alcohol beers, as I have not yet tried a beer that really comes close to the “real” beer in terms of taste, I chose Cruzcampo MIJILLA. The beer is supposed to have only 0.9% alcohol content. Taste-wise, it was quite good, but still not quite to my taste. The aromas dominated and I was missing the typical beer aftertaste in my mouth. Since I also liked the in-house lager, this was the fourth beer on the tasting board.
Depending on the size, the beers are priced at €2.50-5.
Those who prefer to drink other types of beer will find other beers on the menu, which are then served from the bottle rather than freshly tapped.
Is it possible to eat at La Fábrica?
You can also get something to eat in the brewery. However, you should be aware that, according to the menu, the kitchen is not open all day. Lunch is served from 1 to 4.30 pm and dinner from 8 to 2 pm.
We each had a burger on our first visit to the brewery. The portion was more than enough for us. The food tasted good, but not exceptional, more standard. If you prefer tapas, there is a good selection and I also discovered something vegan on the menu.
