We like Lanzarote at every season. This time, we chose March to flee the cold in Germany and instead enjoy 24 degrees Celsius, sunshine and the Hotel SBH Roxal Monica in Playa Blanca.
The Hotel SBH Royal Monica is a three-star hotel. It is in a quiet area about 4km from Playa Blanca at a natural pebble beach. The closest sandy beach is a 15-minute walk away.
We had booked a two-bedroom suite. One of the rooms has a double bed and a humungous wardrobe, the other room has two single beds and a smaller wardrobe. The living room is equipped with a dining table, four chairs, 2 sofa beds and a TV. All rooms have a ceiling fan. One of the bedrooms has an AC. The bathroom comes with a bath.
The interior of the room is simple, yet functional. For a three-star hotel, the value for money was reasonable. The rooms are bright and very well lit. It was always clean (cleaning was done on two days per week) and changing the towels worked well. A big positive for us: the huge safe! The safe was available for an extra fee and had enough space for laptops, camera and other important items – something that, unfortunately, cannot be found in every hotel.
The hotel complex is formed of 5 buildings which hold the 220 rooms on three floors. Our room was close to the sea, only separated from it by the boardwalk, on the first floor. This made for a formidable view. The pool area is not exactly big, I imagine it gets quite crowded in the summer months. The area and the pool are kept very clean, plates and cutlery are regularly cleared up. Additionally, the hotel has a separated beach area by the sea. It is sheltered from the wind and sun lovers will get to fix their cravings.
The garden area of the hotel is very well maintained. It connects the main building to the lobby, the restaurant, the bar, the disco, the pool and the other buildings. The food was tasty. A lot of fresh fish was on the menu and also meat was offered daily. Sides were different every day and included regional dishes and specialities. The dessert buffet was a little disappointing. The cakes weren’t fresh but from the freezer. We would have liked a little more variety here. Still, we were impressed by the rich buffet that we were not expecting for the price that we paid for this holiday.
A little team (two young girls) were responsible for the entertainment. On top of the daycare for children, they organised programmes for the adults as well. They presented them in an entertaining way without putting pressure on the guests to participate. Our verdict: A pleasant three-star hotel with very reasonable value for money that served us well on our holiday.
