Wine-growing on Lanzarote – La Geria

There are vineyards on Lanzarote? It might be hard to imagine, but there are wine-growing areas even on Lanzarote. Driving through this area by car is well worth a go.

The wine-growing area La Geria is in the centre of Lanzarote. Its 5200 hectares next to the Timanfaya National Park make it the biggest wine-growing area on the Canary Islands. The eruptions of a volcano between 1730 and 1736 created massive lapilli layers in that area. The farmers dug funnel-like holes into the ground to regain access to fertile soil. They planted their seedlings at the bottom of these holes. The characteristic properties of volcanic rocks help to lead the sparse rainwater quickly down to the soil and also prevent evaporation thanks to their minimal thermal conductivity. The funnel shape protects the plants from the strong winds that dominate the island.
