Eating tapas in Madrid is simply part of a visit to the city, just like enjoying a regional beer for us. If you can combine the two, an evening in Madrid can be a culinary delight.
Tapas in Madrid
Tapas restaurants can be found on almost every corner in the city. Sometimes they are very touristy and the prices are correspondingly high. However, if you look in the outer districts or even just in the side streets, you will usually find just as good (sometimes even more traditional tapas) and, above all, cheaper options.
Taberna LA CONCHA
Looking for an authentic gastronomic experience in Madrid? Taberna LA CONCHA, located in the lively La Latina district, is just the place.
Since 1996, this charming tapas bar has been delighting visitors with its impressive selection of tapas, wines and beers. The tapas are the real star here. From classic anchovies with parmesan to cheese tapas – there’s something for every palate here.
When it comes to drinks, Taberna LA CONCHA offers an excellent selection of wines and cavas, typical Madrilenian beer and homemade Reus Vermut.
In addition to the culinary offer, it is above all the atmosphere that makes this tapas bar unique. It is small and cozy, the perfect place to unwind after a long day. When we were there, it was quite full and there were only a few seats left. That didn’t stop other visitors from waiting standing on the street with their drink until a table became available. The service is exceptionally friendly and attentive.
The kitchen is open from 13:00 to 24:00.

Mercado de San Miguel
The Mercado de San Miguel is a traditional market that also offers a variety of tapas stalls. Behind the old façade from 1916 is one of the most modern market and food courts in the city.
Here you can buy jamón or other cured meats from Carrasco Guijuelo, cheese, seafood, all kinds of pickled delicacies and tapas. Many of the products come from Spain, such as Castile or the Basque Country.
There are also many stalls where you can buy beer, wine, Asturian cider and the like. In the Sherry Corner, you can enjoy sherry with tapas.

Casa Toni
Casa Toni is an authentic, cozy, simple and rustic tapas bar in Puerta del Sol. It is famous for its garlic prawn tapas. The idea for this type of tapas was born in the years after the Spanish Civil War, when Madrid was experiencing a massive bread shortage.
They prepare their own olive oil and wine and are one of the most self-sufficient tapas bars in Madrid.

Restaurant Los Pepes
Near our accommodation, we discovered a small restaurant that is only frequented by locals. With a few words of Spanish and our hands and feet, communication went really well.
Although the kitchen was actually already closed, we still got our dinner. A huge sausage platter and very good calamari, a beer and the evening was saved for us.

Drinking beer in Madrid
There are several craft beer bars in Madrid that offer very good home-brewed or regional beer.
La Osita Craft Beer
The “Independent Madrid Brewery” is a real insider tip for lovers of craft-brewed, fresh and modern beers.
The founders, David and Patrick, met while studying in Madrid and have since discovered their passion for brewing beer. They served their first beer in 2018 and have since sold more than 100,000 pints of beer to people all over Europe.
David and Patrick believe in the beauty of simplicity when it comes to beer, and their aim is to brew delicious, clean and refined beers – the beers they themselves love to drink. They always offer a wide range of delicious beers, with a focus on soft, silky, hoppy pale ales. La Osita, their bar, is located in the heart of Madrid’s La Latina neighborhood and is home to their newest and freshest beers. They opened this small but beautiful place in one of Madrid’s oldest and most famous streets in March 2019.
The two try to create a real pub atmosphere that has something for everyone. Although they serve their freshest beers here, they also offer a wide selection of other beers, excellent gins and whiskies, as well as various wines.
We really enjoyed the beers we drank there – and more importantly, we felt comfortable!

Brew Wild Pizza Bar
The Brew Wild Pizza Bar is the perfect place for beer and pizza lovers. It is located in the center of Madrid and offers an excellent selection of craft beers and pizzas.
There were 15 different beers on tap during our visit, with something to suit every taste. From IPA to bitter, we were able to choose and our choice was exactly to our taste.
The pizzas are homemade and taste very good.
A tip from us: the bar seems very small. Some visitors left because they couldn’t find a seat. However, there is a staircase down to the basement. There are not only the toilets, but also the most comfortable dining room I’ve seen in a long time.
