If you want to answer the call of adventure while still enjoying relaxing days, then Essaouira in Morocco could be the ideal destination. This charming coastal town is a hidden gem that welcomes its visitors with open arms and an Atlantic breeze.

Strolling through the picturesque old town of Essaouira, with its historic fortress walls and harmonious interweaving of blue and white buildings, is simply an experience. Every corner tells its own story and you almost feel as if you’ve stepped back in time – the medina of the port city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

For those who don’t want to lie on the beach all day, Essaouira offers perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The hospitality of the locals is simply amazing. As you explore the local markets, which offer an abundance of fresh produce and artisan treasures, you will always meet nice people. And when the smell of freshly grilled fish hits your nose, it leads straight to the simple but hearty restaurants by the harbor, where the fish is so fresh it seems to jump straight from the sea onto your plate.

Culturally, Essaouira offers a fascinating diversity. The mixture of African, Arabic and European influences is omnipresent in the architecture, art and music. The Gnaoua music festival in particular is an experience in itself, attracting music lovers from all over the world. But you shouldn’t miss a visit to the city’s many galleries. Here you will find beautiful pictures.

Essaouira is more of a day trip destination for many Moroccan tourists. However, it is worth staying a little longer in one of the many small riads in the medina and discovering the city. The art scene is at home here, there are countless galleries to discover and in the evening you are treated to a breathtaking sunset over the sea.
