The island&#8217;s capital airport, Ir\u00e1klion, is popular with charter planes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By boat<\/strong><br>Car ferries operate between Piraeus and the Greek island. Those who wish to travel with their own boat will find plenty of mooring options in harbours and bays.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-atomic-blocks-ab-accordion ab-block-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"ab-accordion-title\">On the way in \u2026<\/summary><div class=\"ab-accordion-text\">\n<p><strong>By car<\/strong><br>Road conditions on Crete are very variable. You should keep well within the speed limits, often these are a sign of unexpected potholes or poor road surfaces on bends.<br>Herds of sheep and goats can also stand quite abruptly on the road. Road signs are in Greek and usually also in Latin script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cretans tend to drive &#8220;riskily&#8221; and like to honk their horns to attract attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are car rental companies in almost every holiday resort, with quite different offers and qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By bus<\/strong><br>Buses run all over the island. Tickets are available at the bus stations or from the driver.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-atomic-blocks-ab-accordion ab-block-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"ab-accordion-title\">Best time to travel<\/summary><div class=\"ab-accordion-text\">\n<p>Crete is located in the southern Mediterranean. It enjoys almost 300 days of sunshine a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crete can be roughly divided into two different climatic regions, which are separated by the mountain range in the centre of the country. The north is influenced by European weather conditions and the south by African weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summers are hot and dry. The highest temperatures are on the south coast.
