Eisenach is one of the oldest cities in Thuringia and is known worldwide. It is home to Wartburg Castle, one of the most famous castles in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Around 42,000 inhabitants live in Eisenach. This makes the city one of the larger municipalities in Thuringia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eisenach has become known as Luther’s town. Martin Luther lived here for some time at Wartburg Castle, which sits high above the town on a mountain. But Johann Sebastian Bach is also part of the town’s history and you can learn a lot about his life in the Bach House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the second half of the 19th century, with the beginning of industrialisation, the city developed into a centre of the automobile industry. The Wartburg and later models of the Opel company rolled off the assembly line here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eisenach is an ideal starting point for exploring the Thuringian Forest. South of the town, the first mountainous features begin, rising over 400 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the greatest German composers, Johann Sebastian Bach, was born in Eisenach.
