What a wonderful day! We were invited to test the SATAMA Sauna Resort & SPA at Scharmützelsee (Scharmützel Lake) and enjoyed a day full of quiet relaxation.

We departed on an early Sunday morning to visit the Sauna in Berlin-Brandenburg. We arrived at the SATAMA Sauna Resort & SPA at Scharmützelsee after about an hour’s drive on the motorway. The lighthouse, their characteristic landmark, was visible from afar.

Sibirian Banya

The friendly staff at reception welcomed us and gave the first induction. In a light drizzle we set out to explore the area. A first look at the outside of all the different sauna types already suggested that there would be something for everybody’s individual relaxation preferences.

We had a look at their program online before we came and still had a little bit of time until the first item on our agenda. So we settled down in the restaurant and had a coffee first. I was eager to participate in the sauna yoga that they had on but at the same time, a tour of the resort was scheduled so we split up for a little bit.

Sauna-Yoga in the Fairytale Sauna

Usually, the Fairytale Sauna is heated up to a cosy 75°C and fairytales are read out during the sauna session. The temperature is reduced to 45 – 50°C for sauna yoga so that participants can enjoy the relaxing heat with some movement. I was curious.

"Sauna

Participants of the sauna yoga wore loose clothing and as opposed to “normal” yoga were seated on the sauna benches instead of standing or lying on mats. For 20 minutes we went through short sequences of movement that were not too hard on the body at the high temperature of the room and that were suitable for all ages. The instructions for the individual sequences were presented in such a lovely way that contributed immensely to the relaxing atmosphere. After the sauna yoga, I was perfectly prepared for the following sauna sessions. Many thanks for this new yoga experience!

Sauna program

The sauna program at the SATAMA Sauna Resorts is quite varied. Different infusions are scheduled for different times in the saunas. Thre are 9 different saunas, a steam room, a heated outside pool and multiple quiet rooms. There is even the option to dip into the Scharmützelsee to cool down.

"Stollensauna
Mine Sauna

Reunited, we went into the mine sauna for our first joint sauna session of the day.
The ambience of that sauna was lovely and the temperature of 70°C was perfect for starting our sauna day.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to join the miner’s ritual. The salt exfoliation would have added to the sauna experience.

"Ruheraum

Afterwards, it was time to give the body some recreation time. Visitors can retreat to one of the many quiet rooms or use one of the loungers in the garden. Fluffy blankets are available for extra comfort.
I had already picked a room in the morning that looked nice to relax and read in. The room was almost empty but all loungers were occupied with bags or towels. So we chose a different room, wrapped up in a soft fur blanket and enjoyed the view of the garden. Fantastic!

Once we got up, well-rested, we continued to explore the sauna in Berlin-Brandenburg.

The Maa®Sauna, the Tuli®Sauna and the Siberian banya are all located in the garden.

"Sauna
Maa®Sauna

The Maa®Sauna is partially underground and gets heated to 100 – 120°C. It is the warmest sauna of the resort.

The Siberian banya fits about 50 people. Guest step into the foyer to the sounds of the Don Cossack Choir. This sauna offers classic wet sauna sessions with bundles of birch twigs.

We, however, fell in love with the Tuli®sauna. This one is hexagonal with a glass fireplace in the centre. Logs burn in the fireplace and visitors sweat in the 90 to 95°C heat. This is where we ended our sauna day in the late afternoon.
But before that, we visited the resort’s highlight.

Theatre Sauna

I have not heard of any other sauna in Berlin-Brandenburg that combines a sauna session with a theatre show. The size of that sauna alone is impressive. It fits about 160 guests who get to enjoy a hybrid of wet sauna and spectacular show. Shows run multiple times per day with different artists.

We were curious before the show began and what we then saw was a big surprise. Pleasant melodies took us away, into the world of the king of all animals. The pouring of the water for the wet sauna was a celebration and it was truly an event that was worth seeing and experiencing. The balmy 95°C heat and the essential oils stimulated the senses. The performances with whirling fabrics fanned more hot air over the audience. A great show!
