During our walks through Karlovy Vary we always noticed the beautiful houses. Discovering Karlovy Vary is really worth it, we present 7 great places…

Lázně III – Bath III

If you walk from the Sprudel in the spa center along the left side of the Teplá River, you will come to a long building after the Mill Fountain Colonnades. The two-storey building was opened in 1866 and bears the name Bath III.

The spa house initially had a dual function. It served as a concert and music center of Karlovy Vary . In addition, the cultural offer was supplemented with the possibility to visit a restaurant. However, the main focus was on its use as a spa. All known healing methods were used here at that time.

"Bad

During the Second World War, parts of the building were used as a hospital. From 1951 the Central Health Institute of Czechoslovak Spas and Hot Springs was housed there.
A fire in 2002 destroyed the ceremonial hall. Fortunately, the hall was restored and the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra can play concerts there again.

Today, the spa center offers classic therapies and modern balneology therapies.

Funicular at Theaterplatz

"Eingang

Hidden in a house entrance is the entrance to the first funicular in Karlovy Vary.

This was opened in May 1907 and connected Divadelní náměstí (Theaterplatz) with the Helenenhof Café at the Imperial Hotel. The funicular was built to connect the newly built large hotel with the town.

In 1980, the funicular had to be shut down. The condition was too bad. After renovation work, traffic could be resumed at the end of 1987.

The line runs completely underground. It is 127 meters long and is said to have a gradient of 495 ‰ at the steepest point.

"Blick

The train is one of the means of public transport in Karlovy Vary. You need a valid ticket or you can ride for free with Karlovy Vary Region Card. The train runs approximately every 15 minutes, the exact times are posted in the valley station and in the mountain station.

We searched a bit until we found the entrance to the station. The train was just in the station and so we could immediately get into one of the two cars. In 70 seconds you have reached your destination. Unfortunately, much too fast, I think.

"Karlsbader

The top station is located in a beautiful building and is much more visible from the outside than the bottom station. From there it is only a few meters to the Hotel Imperial.

"Bergstation

Hotel Imperial

One of the most impressive buildings in the city, I think, is the Hotel Imperial. From almost everywhere you can have a look at the huge building and so I just had to go there to get a close-up view.

"Hotel

An entrepreneur from Karlovy Vary had the idea of building a hotel high above the city before there was even a transport connection. He wanted to create an offer that did not exist in the valley and build a fairy-tale international hotel with an ideal view of the region. Before that, however, the question of accessibility had to be resolved, because potential guests could not be offered a walk to the accommodation. After the funicular and a road were completed in 1912, the hotel could be opened.

"Hotel

I think the building is really impressive, it reminds me a bit of the Disney Hotels in Paris. Almost like a castle, the building towers above the city. If you go from the funicular to the hotel, you stand on a spacious open area, which looks like a small park in front of the entrance. You can walk to the hotel entrance via stairs, or you can drive right up to the entrance by car.

"Blick

Many famous guests have visited hotel. From noble visitors like Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria to artists like Mary Pickford (actress) or the singer Seal, some famous people have enjoyed the luxury here.

Grandhotel Pupp

No less impressive is the Grandhotel Pupp, which is located in the centre of Karlovy Vary. The luxury hotel is very large and very eye-catching.

"Grandhotel

In 1701, the mayor of Karlovy Vary had build at the request of August the Strong the “Saxon Hall” pleasure establishment on the site where the hotel now stands. A few years later, a pleasure house (Bohemian Hall) was added.

The confectioner Pupp moved to Karlovy Vary in 1760 and after a few yearshe became the owner of both halls. There was still some space on the premises and so he built the small inn “Zum Auge Gottes”. The small two-storey building is now Café Pupp. The confectioner initially had the Bohemian Hall converted into a concert and ballroom, but then had it demolished in 1892 to build a modern hotel.

In 1907, the magnificent neo-baroque building was completed and attracted numerous guests from all over the world under the direction of Julius Pupp.

After the nationalisation after the Second World War, the hotel was given the name Grandhotel Moskva, and only in 1989 after privatisation it was given back the name Grandhotel Pupp.

"Abendliches

The impressive building is also often used as a film location. For example, scenes for the James Bond film Casino Royale were shot here. In the film, the hotel is located in Montenegro and is called Splendide.

Spa Hotel Thermal

Impressive, but in a very different way from the two beautiful old hotel buildings, is the modern hotel block of the Spa Hotel Thermal.

"Spa

This, in my opinion, terrible building was erected in 1967-76 in the centre of Karlovy Vary only a few metres away from the colonnades. Visually, it does not fit into the cityscape at all. When we were in Karlovy Vary, the building seemed quite empty, although many athletes of the Karlovy Vary Triathlon lived there.

The hotel has a “lost place” to offer. If you walk up the hill behind the hotel, you come to the outdoor swimming pool of the hotel complex. It was completely run down when we visited the city, which is actually quite a pity. From up here you have a great view of the city and such a view from the pool is definitely very relaxing.

"Lost

Russian Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul

After a long hike, we passed the beautiful Russian Orthodox Church in Karlovy Vary’s Westend neighborhood.

The church was built in 1893-1898 from donations of Serbian and Russian believers and replaced an older church in the village.

"russisch

The gilded domes shine in the sun and you feel a bit transported to Russia when you stand in front of the church. From the outside the building looks beautiful. It is decorated with ornaments and pictures with figures.

"russische

Church St.Mary Magdalene

Right next to the Sprudel in Karlovy Vary stands another very impressive church, built as early as 1733-1736. The present church already had a medieval Gothic predecessor with a cemetery in the same place. Later it burned down several times and was replaced by the present building. The construction work often proved to be difficult, as hot springs escaped on the construction site, endangering the workers.

"Kirche

The baroque church has a central nave surrounded by four niches. It is noticeable that the interior walls of the church are concave curved. Under the church is a crypt, which contains the bones of people who were previously buried in the old cemetery.

Discover Karlovy Vary in the evening

It is worth taking an evening walk through Karlovy Vary. The city appears in a romantic glow of light.
