<\/figure>\n\n\n\nFirst we headed north along the shore road. After about 40 minutes we reached a small town, which our driver called “Banana-Town” and explained to us that this was his home town. We would now drive here for lunch to a typical Berber family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drive through the town was correspondingly “noisy” – there was honking, shouting and waving. Then finally we stopped. We were led into a small house where the driver’s aunt was already waiting with one of the best tajine dishes I had ever eaten. Traditionally, the food was eaten with fingers and accompanied by wonderful Moroccan tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After about 30 minutes, it was time to get back in the car – but before that, we got two boards from a storage room and then collected the actual trainer a few street corners away. By car it was now a good 15 minutes until we turned off the main road and were driven as close to the sand dunes as possible. This is also where we were picked up later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We had reached the Taboga sand dunes – now we were really excited to see what would await us. We went up a small hill through the soft sand. Luckily we didn’t have to carry the boards ourselves, I already had enough to do climbing up the hill. It went according to the method “2 steps up and 1 step down”, the shoes filled more and more with sand (I shook it out of my shoes even back in Berlin) and my breath was visibly heavier. But that was just the beginning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Arriving at the smaller hill, we got a crash course in sandboarding in Morocco: feet like this, knees like this, arms like this and then go! \u00c4ahhh – just go like that?! Braking, turning corners to regulate speed?! We got a nice smile and the explanation: riding curves doesn’t really work – you stand up and slide down. The friction of the sand doesn’t let the speed get that high – yes, and besides, it goes uphill again on the other side. Kindly, the trainer drove up once and showed us the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Well, then nothing could go wrong. So Patrick stood on the board. You don’t put your feet in a binding like you do when snowboarding, but simply next to it. This also makes it easier to jump off the board and you don’t fall into the sand so quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What can I say, it’s like it always is. Patrick stands on the board, slides off and arrives at the bottom without any problems. No wobbling, no falling down – he just rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As soon as we arrived at the bottom, the trainer ran and carried the board to the top. We quickly learned to appreciate this service, as it is very strenuous to walk up the dune in the soft sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes, and then came my first time\u2026 I’m not unathletic, but I’m always very careful. The fear of injuring myself and then not being able to work always resonates subliminally. But I have to say that my first ride went really well. I did jump off the board at the end of the ride – but I didn’t land in the sand!<\/p>\n\n\n\n For over an hour we went up the board and down the dune. Patrick felt so confident after a few rides that he also tried slightly higher dune sections. I preferred to stay in the “beginner’s area” and thus gained more and more confidence in my movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even though the ride only lasted a few seconds, we really enjoyed it. I don’t know how many times we ran back up the dune. We tried both boards and I went down a slightly higher dune sitting down. There was a lot of laughing and sweating. You should definitely not forget to pack something to drink!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, we were not the only visitors in this breathtaking area. There were still some small groups there, some enjoying the beautiful view or even whizzing down the slope on their surfboards. But there was so much space during our visit that you had your own dune and could ride carefree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a little more than an hour, not only our fitness but also our concentration began to wane. Now we still had time and could look out over the sea from the dunes. It was a view I will not forget in a hurry. The water glistened in the sunlight, the sand was pleasantly warm and the sun was not yet too hot.
