Hardly any other city is associated with Mozart as much as Vienna. Here he lived for many years and here the composer died on 5.12.1791.

Well, I really don’t know all the pieces Mozart wrote in the course of his short life, but some of them I already learned at school and I still like to listen to them today.
I went on the trail of the exceptional composer in Vienna and visited some places that played a decisive role in his life.

Mozart’s homes in Vienna

Mozart lived in many apartments during his time in Vienna. Depending on the available funds, these were selected, in some he lived as a subtenant and in some he was the main tenant.

I would like to briefly introduce some of his stations.

Deutschordenshaus

From 18.3. to 2.5.1781 Mozart lived in the Singerstraße 7. A small commemorative plaque next to the entrance to the small church (in the house entrance) points to it today.

"Mozart

At the age of 25, Mozart was in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg. He lived in this house with the archbishop’s entourage. During a visit to Vienna, a quarrel broke out and Mozart resigned. The legendary kick thereupon promoted Mozart from the house.

"Gedenktafel

An uncertain time began, because now Mozart worked freelance and had to see where he could earn money for his family. It soon became apparent that Mozart was a self-confident young man and knew that his music was good.

If you have some time left, you should visit the small church of the Deutschordenshaus. The small monastery church has over eighty coats of arms on the walls. The so-called Aufschwörschilde are mostly divided coats of arms with 4 fields. Wealthy knights deposited them in the church after their knighthood.

"Deutschordenskirche

I have not seen anything like this in any church yet.

Milchgasse/Petersplatz

From May to September 1781 Mozart lived as a subtenant on the second floor at Milchgasse 1. He moved in here directly after being thrown out of the Deutschordenshaus completely penniless. Frau Weber, a widow with 4 daughters and related to Carl Maria von Weber, rented rooms at a reasonable price. Mozart fell in love here with one of the daughters (Constanze), whom he was later to marry.

Graben 17

After the love affair with Constanze became known, Mozart moved out of the Weber family apartment. On 2.9.1781 he moved into an apartment on the third floor of the house at Graben 17.
Here he wrote, for example, “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” (The Abduction from the Seraglio), an opera which had its premiere on 16.7.1872 in the old Burgtheater. Mozart earned so much money that he was able to finance his marriage to Constanze. He moved with her several times in the course of the next period.

Graben 29

On 23.1.1784 the two moved into the Trattnerhof. Unfortunately, the large building no longer exists today, but it was located at Graben 29. They rented an apartment with two living rooms and a kitchen at a special reduced price of 130 guilders. On 21.9.1784 Carl Thomas saw the light of day here. This son of Mozart survived his father.

During the time that Mozart lived at the Trattnerhof, he began to compile a “Verzeichnüß aller meiner Werke”. This served as the basis for the later Köchelverzeichnis.

Mozarthouse Vienna

Mozart was looking for a new apartment that was more representative and larger than his previous accommodation. On 29.9.1784 the family moved to Domgasse 5 into an apartment on the second floor. Mozart did not live in any apartment for such a long time (until 24.4.1887).
The apartment on the second floor consisted of 4 rooms, two cabinets and a kitchen. It cost (including the stable rent) 480 guilders rent.

"Mozarthaus

Today, the house at Domgasse 5 is home to Mozarthouse Vienna. Here you can not only visit the only still existing Viennese apartment of Mozart, here is also an interesting museum on the subject of Mozart. I visited Mozarthouse Vienna and wrote about it. A really interesting museum that you should not miss.

Mozart’s house of death

Mozart’s time in Domgasse was followed by several more apartments where the family lived in Vienna. On 29.9.1790 Mozart moved into his last apartment in Vienna. In a large apartment with six rooms, two kitchens and adjoining rooms at Rauhensteingasse 8, Mozart was to die of “hot Friesel fever” on December 5, 1791.

He was heavily in debt, although his operas were performed throughout Europe and enjoyed great success. But more than fame and recognition, Mozart would have been happy to have a permanent position that would have brought regular money.
Mozart worked feverishly, trying everything to pay off his debts. One of his last commissions was to compose a Requiem for a then unknown patron (known today as Count Walsegg-Stuppach). The latter made a large down payment and urged Mozart to hurry. Mozart had a premonition and feared composing his own requiem mass. Mozart’s premonition seemed to come true, and he fell seriously ill. According to one legend, a rehearsal of the unfinished Requiem took place at the artist’s deathbed.
After his death, Mozart’s wife Constanze was able to pay off his debts with the help of some benefactors and from the proceeds of his estate, and to secure a carefree future for Mozart’s sons.

Unfortunately, the house no longer exists today. At this place now stands the department store “Steffl”. I was told that in memory of Mozart there should be a bust on the seventh floor. Unfortunately, there is a skybar, which you can only enter with a reservation and so I could not take a picture. However, who turns in, is additionally rewarded with a great view over Vienna. Already from the escalator the view was worthwhile.

Interesting “Mozart places” in Vienna

Mozart, of course, spent his time in Vienna not only in the apartments and worked. He also lived in the city and left his mark in some places.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

""/

Wolfgang Amadé Mozart and Constanze Weber were married on August 4, 1782 in St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The wedding is said to have been rather modest, which was certainly related to the financial means of the composer.
The marriage of the two was very happy and Constanze gave birth to a total of six children. Unfortunately, only 2 children survived infancy, these were baptized in St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Shortly before his death, Mozart applied for the well-paid position of Cathedral Kapellmeister. Unfortunately, he did not receive the position.

When Mozart died in 1791, the simple funeral service for the composer took place in St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Chapel of the Crucifix

If you walk around St. Stephen’s Cathedral, you will quickly find the Crucifix Chapel. Behind the wrought-iron gate there is a memorial plaque to the composer and musician. The inscription reads: “At this place the immortal W. A. MOZART’s body was blessed on December 6, 1791”.

"Kruzifixkapelle

From here the coffin was taken to the cemetery.

St. Michael’s Church

Right next to the Hofburg, on Michaelerplatz, stands the Michaelerkirche (St. Michael’s Church). It is one of the few Romanesque buildings in the city and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael.

""/

The church is known mainly because of the crypt. Here there are special climatic conditions, which lead to the fact that some corpses do not decompose but mummify.

It is less known that on 10.12.1791, shortly after Mozart’s death, a memorial service was held here in his honor.

In the church on Michaelerplatz, musicians played parts of the Requiem for the first time. Presumably they played the first or even the first two movements, because only these had been completed by then. The memorial service was donated by Emanuel Schikaneder, an actor, singer, director and poet.

Café Frauenhuber

Café Frauenhuber is located at Himmelpfortgasse 6. Here was the Jahn’s concert hall, where Mozart performed several times.
On 4.3.1791 he gave his last public concert here as a pianist. He played the piano concerto KV595.

"Gedenktafel

Hofburg Castle Garden

In the castle garden of the Hofburg stands a monument to Mozart. In the front you can recognize a scene from “Don Giovanni”. The back shows him as a child prodigy with his sister Nannerl and father Leopold.

"Denkmal

St.Marx cemetery – the grave of Mozart

Many visitors to Vienna believe that Mozart is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery. But this is not correct. There has only been a monument in the area of the honorary graves since 1891, which is supposed to commemorate Mozart. His mortal remains are not to be found here.

"Hinweisschild

Mozart was buried in a shaft grave with four or five other dead people in the St.Marx cemetery at Leberstraße 6-8. It was a pauper’s burial without a grave cross and without ceremonies.
Today it is not known exactly where the grave is located in this beautiful Biedermeier cemetery. It was not until 1859 that a tomb was erected on the spot where the grave was thought to be.
I went to the cemetery in the morning on the day we left Vienna to see Mozart’s final resting place. If you have a thing for beautiful cemeteries, you should definitely walk around here a bit. I have rarely seen such an interesting cemetery.

"Gedenkstein

Although this monument is not even in a historical “Mozart place”, it is one of the main photo points for tourists.
