Only a few minutes’ drive from Cetinje is Lipa Cave, a large karst cave that has been opened to visitors. We went there quite spontaneously to take part in a guided tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
From the main road between Cetinje and Podgorica there is a clearly visible turn-off to the cave. A 3 kilometre long and partly quite narrow path leads to a large car park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Here you will find the ticket office and a small caf\u00e9 where you can bridge any waiting time. I can only recommend going there a little earlier. The view of the valley from there alone is simply stunning. We sat there for 30 minutes with a coffee and enjoyed the beautiful nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Information about the Dripstone Cave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Lipska pe\u0107ina or Lipa Cave is one of the largest caves in Montenegro and the only cave that can be visited. The karst cave consists of a system of corridors, caves and passages of a good 2.5 kilometres, part of which is used by an underground river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cave was found rather by chance. A dog had fallen into a hole and while searching for it, the upper entrance to the cave was discovered. Today, this is no longer used; there is a new entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Exploration of the cave began as early as the 19th century. Many researchers explored the cave system. During the occupation by the Austrian troops at the beginning of the 20th century, the soldiers widened the cave entrance in order to access drinking water. They were also instrumental in further exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since 2015, it has been possible to visit the cave with a guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Impressions from Lipa Cave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A visit to the cave is only possible at certain times and with a guided group. We had looked at the times in advance and decided on the last date on that day. Ideal for us in terms of time, this date was uninteresting for larger bus groups because it was in the middle of the day and so we didn’t have to buy tickets in advance. From the car park, a small “train” takes groups of visitors to the cave entrance and back to the car park after the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The temperature in the cave is 8-12 degrees all year round. We were already informed of this when we bought our entrance ticket and asked for a warm top. We had warm clothes with us, other visitors borrowed a jacket on site. And believe me, you will be glad if you are dressed warmly. A visit to Lipa Cave is the ideal way to cool off on a hot day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Arriving at the cave entrance, our tour guide opened a door and immediately cold air poured out. A well-lit path led us into the depths of the cave. You should walk very carefully, it is slippery everywhere. I recommend wearing sturdy shoes to be on the safe side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
During the guided tour, of course, you learn a lot about the history of the cave discovery and the process of the formation of the stalactites there. The stalactites, stalagmites and stalagnates in the cave form really impressive formations. As in many other dripstone caves we have visited so far, there are spaghetti, popcorn, crocodile and curtain formations to be seen. Some of them are really really big and formed over thousands of years. Many of the formations have been given names. For example, there is a large stalactite formation that resembles a castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
For us it was not the first visit to a stalactite cave. What impressed me most about Lipa Cave was the naturalness of the site. Of course the stalactites are illuminated, but there is no artificial light show with music or flickering light effects. I like it much better this way, because you can experience the actual main actors of the cave, the stalactites, in their unadulterated beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The whole tour – including the train ride – takes 60 minutes. I could have spent much more time in the cave to admire the wonders created by water and limestone deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
