Malta’s cities are not so big that you have to rely on exploring them by bus or something similar. We set out on foot for a leisurely stroll through Mdina and Rabat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Mdina, the former capital of the island, is situated on a hill. The Phoenicians built a settlement and surrounded it with protective walls. They called the city Malet (refuge). Later the name changed to Melita and when the Arabs took over the island, the government district was renamed Mdina and the suburb Rabat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mdina served as a residence for ecclesiastical and secular rulers, while Rabat was more the seat of commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
