Unfortunately, we did not have much time to discover Bologna in more detail. We were in the city for a good 24 hours and have discovered some beautiful places that make you want to plan a longer stay. We would like to briefly present our Bologna tips.

By train we went from Florence to Bologna. The journey on the modern regional train takes a good 1.5 hours.

At the train station we bought a day ticket for the public transport. You can get these in a kiosk/tabaco store in the entrance hall for 6,-€.

After a short stopover at the hotel, we went on a discovery tour through the city.

1. Piazza Maggiore

Our first port of call is Piazza Maggiore, the main square of Bologna. This really big square has already been used as a market place of the city in the 13th century. Since the 15th century there is the current layout, surrounded by some imposing medieval buildings.

"Piazza

Here you can really stay for a long time and stroll from one point to the next.

The oldest building in the square dates back to the 13th century. The Palazzo del Podestà stands on the northern side of the square. The building is surmounted by the Torre dell’Arengo. To the west of the square stands the Palazzo d’Accursio, a 14th century building, to the south the Basilica of San Petronio and to the east the Palazzo dei Banchi. Here the famous archway, called Pavaglione by the people of Bologna, adjoins. In the extension of the corridor is the Archiginnasio (medieval seat of the University of Bologna and library).

"Piazza

We took a closer look at some of the buildings.

Note: The tourist information is located directly in the square. Here you can get, for example, the tickets for the tower climb in the Leaning Tower of Bologna.

2. Palazzo
d‘Accursio

In the palazzo today is the city administration. Unfortunately, we could not take a look inside the building. There are supposed to be staircases here that have wide and flat steps. Thus, at the time when the building was the seat of the Council of Elders, the lords could ride their horses in the building to the appropriate rooms.

On the second floor there was a Royal Hall. There in 1530 Charles V received the Iron Crown as King of Italy. The hall was rebuilt in 1665.

"Piazza

I was very impressed by the main facade of the building. Above the portal is a bronze statue of Pope Gregory XIII from 1580. When the sun shines, the statue flashes and twinkles.
A terracotta sculpture, created in 1478, depicting the Madonna and Child, is another decorative element of the facade.

3. Basilica San
Petronio

From the outside the basilica looks very unadorned, but nevertheless it determines the image of Piazza Maggiore. The church is the main church of Bologna and really big. About 132 meters long and 60 meters wide, with a vault height of 45 meters, it surrounds a space of 258,000 m³ and is considered the largest brick church in the world.

In front of the church are armed soldiers/police, which for me always has a somewhat strange aftertaste. But here it really has a background, the church was allegedly already targeted by terrorist cells and has only narrowly escaped an attack. However, since no bag checks or the like were carried out, the topic of showing presence seems to be the order of the day here.

"Basilika

We went to the basilica and I was really surprised by the design and artwork inside. Photography is allowed in the church for a fee of 2,-€.

Unfortunately, the roof terrace of the basilica was closed. For 3, – € one comes with elevator and stairs to 54 meters height. A maximum of 25 people are allowed to enjoy the panoramic view over Bologna at the same time.

"schiefen

4. The leaning towers of bologna

Really impressive for me was the visit to the Torre Garisenda and Torre Asinelli. The two leaning towers stand very close to the Piazza Maggiore.

We climbed the nearly 500 steps of the Torre Asinelli and were rewarded with a gorgeous view over Bologna.

5. “Little Venice” of Bologna

In the Middle Ages, Bologna had many canals that were used as transportation routes and to supply drinking water. Today, not so many of them remain, but you can find hidden remains between the houses in the old town.

We were attracted by great Instagram pictures to the photo spot in Via Piella. Here you can take a look at the “Little Venice” of Bologna through a window.

Yes, and then…so we looked through the window and what we saw was not even close to what we had seen in other pictures. There were only puddles in the canal and no running water. There we were in Pisa and Florence dealing with the aftermath of the flood and here in Bologna just a few miles away there was no water. Too bad! But so there is unfortunately only a picture of a dry Little Venice from Bologna.

"Bologna

6. Arcades

In Bologna’s historic center, one walks from one place to the next in countless arcaded passages. Almost 38 kilometers of arcades can be found in the city, and a walk along the streets is thus a very special experience.

"Altstadt"

"Arkadengänge

No two corridors are alike. There is the simple variant, which sometimes looks rather dark and slightly dingy, and the pompous arcades, which are bright and impress the visitor with wonderful ceiling designs. But all of them have one thing in common: they not only protect from rain, but also offer a shady place and cooling in the hot summer. Some of the streets are almost inviting for window shopping.
