Not far from Regensburg is the small town of Abensberg. We took a little diversions on our way to Regensburg to see the Kuchlbauer Tower here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
On the grounds of the Kuchlbauer brewery stands the most extraordinary tower I have seen in a long time. The golden dome can be seen from afar and doesn’t just captivate us. Every year, many visitors come here to see the tower and to drink the brewery’s beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kuchlbauer Tower: the story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Friedensreich Hundertwasser planned to build a 70-metre-high tower on the grounds of the brewery in cooperation with the brewery owner. The original plan was to house various facilities there and thus provide a cultural focal point for the people in the region and an attraction for the brewery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monument protection authorities and the mayor of Abensberg obtained a court order that Hundertwasser’s plans had to be modified and revised. Pelikan reduced the building height to 34.19 metres and redesigned the building in Hundertwasser’s style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hundertwasser died in 2000 while still in the planning phase. Long-time companion and architect Peter Pelikan took over the project in a critical phase. There was resistance to Hundertwasser’s plans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
The foundation stone was finally laid in 2007 and the Kuchlbauer Tower was opened to visitors in 2010. Since then, the stream of visitors has not stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The visit to the brewery and the tower is only possible in combination with a guided tour. First, visitors experience a guided tour of the brewery, followed by a visit to the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stairs and a lift take you up to the 25-metre-high viewing platform. In the tower you can learn about beer brewing and admire a collection of 4200 wheat beer glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A quick visit to the tower<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
We drove by car directly to the front of the tower. There is only one car park for a few cars here, and you are only allowed to park there for 30 minutes. If you are planning a longer visit, you should drive to the visitors’ car park, which is about 5-10 minutes’ walk from the Kuchlbauer tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since you can only visit the tower in conjunction with a guided tour of the brewery, and unfortunately we didn’t have time to wait for the next tour, we walked around the grounds. You also have a great view of the building from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The golden dome outshines the entire grounds. The sun was reflected in the dome during our visit and it glittered beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tower is really impressive. I love Hundertwasser’s architectural style. The curved shapes and the colour combinations are simply unique. I was already very impressed by it in Vienna when we visited the Hundertwasserhaus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
