I reach Rheinsberg by water and leave the ship of the Blue and White Fleet at a pier. Patrick is already waiting for me, he went to Rheinsberg by car.
Back to Mirow I will not go the three hours by boat. I have decided to enjoy a leisurely half day in Rheinsberg and return later by car.

What you should know about Rheinsberg…

Rheinsberg is a town in Brandenburg in the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin. Here in the Ruppiner Land in the Rheinsberg lake district, the town is located directly on Lake Grienerick. With 17 districts, some townships and residential areas, Rheinsberg is one of the largest municipalities in Germany in terms of area.

The history of the city is marked by the history of the castle. The Friderizian style palace even served as a model for the Sanssouci Palace and is one of the most beautiful palaces in Brandenburg.

"Parkeingang

The town has inspired several artists over the years: Kurt Tucholsky published a book titled “Rheinsberg: A Picture Book for Lovers” and Fontane mentions Rheinsberg in his “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg”.

The city plays a crucial role in the region’s tourism. The castle, numerous hotel complexes and the beautiful nature offer an ideal recreational area for the Berlin population and attract not only day tourists.

"Schlossimpression"

Rheinsberg Palace

In 1566, the von Bredow family had a moated palace built in Rheinsberg in the Renaissance style. Unfortunately, this was severely damaged during the Thirty Years’ War.

The ownership of the estate changed very frequently through sales or donations until finally Crown Prince Friedrich (later King Friedrich II) received the palace. In 1736, he moved into the southern wing of the palace with his wife Crown Princess Elisabeth Christine.
He hired the master builders Kemmeter and von Knobelsdorff and had the palace remodeled and expanded. The previously single-story building was given an upper floor and the east wing was extended by 25 meters. The result was a beautiful building in the Friderizian Rococo style.

"Rheinsberger

Friedrich’s time in Rheinsberg ended with his accession to the throne in 1740, and he gave the castle to his younger brother Heinrich, who moved in with his wife in 1752. It is thanks to him that the palace and the palace park were further expanded and embellished. Both pavilions were built in the park and the Rheinsberg obelisk was erected on the opposite side of the lake. Heinrich also had his tomb built in the form of a demolished pyramid in the garden, where he was buried in 1802.

In 1945, the former owners, the House of Hohenzollern, were expropriated. In GDR times, the castle was used as a diabetic clinic. Today the complex belongs to the Foundation of Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg. Extensive restoration work has taken place and today the castle once again houses a museum.

We took a little tour around the castle and especially enjoyed the really indescribably beautiful view over the lake. I wonder if small tables used to stand here and the high lords enjoyed their drink? I could imagine it today in any case to sit here and let the day end.

"Schlossgarten"

We didn’t go to the palace, we preferred to go from the castle garden to the castle park in fantastic weather.

Walk through the palace park

The first thing that struck me in the extensive palace park is that precision and perfection are not the order of the day here. The bushes and meadows grow especially in the rear part of the park partly very natural. The grass stood tall and seemed in some places more like a wildly growing meadow and not like a perfectly styled park of a castle. I like that very much and so our walk stretched a little longer than actually planned.

"Patrick

From the palace island, the path first led us through two densely overgrown arcades to the main avenue. This forms a visual axis to the castle.
From the main avenue, the path led us in the direction of a salon, which was unfortunately closed off with a construction fence.

"Feldsteingrotte"

We strolled past the Sternrondell and arrived at the Feldstein Grotto. Unfortunately, it was rather unattractive here. The grotto, closed with lattices, was full of objects and was rather a storage room and not well-designed park content of a castle. Through the hedge parterre we got back to the Querallee.

"wunderschön,

Following the cross alley we reached the Egeriagrotte. What an enchanted place, overgrown and not particularly well maintained – almost waiting for fairies and elves to appear here. Like in a fairy tale.

We continued through a park area that almost seemed like a small forest and the closer we got to the shore of the lake, the more the vegetation changed and there were dense reed areas next to the path. Finally we arrived at a meadow below the obelisk.

Rheinsberg obelisk

The obelisk in Rheinsberg stands in the palace park on a hill at the Grienericksee. We had already admired it from the opposite side of the lake. The obelisk is even more impressive when you stand directly in front of it.
Henry of Prussia had the obelisk erected in the early 1790s. He wanted to honor his brother August Wilhelm of Prussia and 28 other participants of the Seven Years War.

"Obelisk

On the front you can see a relief of August Wilhelm. For the 28 officers he had memorial plates made, which received a personal inscription. I particularly like the fence that has been erected around the obelisk. The golden helmets on the tops of the fence offer a great perspective and make the memorial place look very imposing.

"Zaun

If you want a good view of Rheinsberg Castle, you should walk up the small hill to the obelisk – it’s worth it!

Rheinsberg shopping tip

In the Mühlenstraße in Rheinsberg we came across the “marmelo”.

"Marmelo

Here you not only get regional products from various suppliers, here you can also buy homemade jam from their own manufactory. I couldn’t resist and picked up a caramel cream, which was so good that my mouth is still watering as I write this.

"Marmelo

But in the “marmelo” you can not only shop, but also have breakfast or enjoy as we did an excellent piece of cake with a good coffee. There are offers for vegans!

Rheinsberg restaurant tip

After such a beautiful walk we went to eat at the restaurant “Grünzeug’s”. The restaurant has a stylish dining room with small seating areas that have more of a lounge character. If you prefer to sit at a “real” table, you will find enough seats in the courtyard.

"Restauranttipp

We tried the vegetarian and vegan burgers. The buns were a bit soft, but the burger itself was very good. I was thrilled with the strawberry elderberry punch (no alcohol) with freshly harvested strawberries from their own garden.

"Vegetartische

We liked it there very much and it tasted really good. The price-performance ratio was extremely good.
