Oberwiesenthal is home to several ski jumps of different sizes, which are also used as an Olympic base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The history of ski jumping began in Oberwiesenthal as early as 1911 on the Sch\u00f6njungferngrund ski jump. The German championship held there was won by a jumper with a distance of 12 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1938, the first Fichtelberg ski jump was completed for the jumpers. At that time, people jumped around 80 metres from a large wooden tower from the most modern ski jump in Germany. The ski jump record dates back to 1970 and was 85 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From 1974, ski jumpers were able to jump from a newly built ski jump. This led from a steel tower into the depths. The technique of ski jumping and the construction of ski jumps developed rapidly and so the profile of the ski jump was changed again and again. Other smaller jumps were built and today there are six different jumping possibilities. There are jumps with the K-points (critical point where the slope of the jump becomes flatter and makes the landing dangerous) K 95, K 64, K 51, K 36, K 15, K 8 and K 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The smallest ski jumps were a bit off the beaten track. I wonder if adult beginners also make their first attempts here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Fichtelbergschanzen can be used all year round. From mid\/late November, the terrain is covered with snow, and when this is no longer possible from April due to the rising temperatures, training takes place on mats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We visited the ski jump complex twice and were able to watch young male and female ski jumpers training and competing on the large normal hill. Coincidentally, a competition in the Nordic combined was taking place in the youth area and gave us a little idea of what the atmosphere must be like here at international competitions of top athletes. I had only ever watched ski jumping on TV, but standing in the run-out area of the huge hill and looking up at the athletes, I got a completely different impression. The small dot high up quickly gets bigger and finally flies through the air. Hats off to the young talents we watched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the competition ended, the stadium announcement told us when and where the competition would continue. The Nordic combined also includes cross-country skiing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The “Sparkassen-Skiarena” is just under 4 kilometres from the centre of the village. We set off on foot to continue watching the athletes there and, of course, to see the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the centre of the village, the road led only uphill, to the site 1100 metres above sea level. The navigation device led us along a wide road that is not used by cars. Only later did I find out that it was the summer sled run. Wheeled sleds go down there. With the gradient, they are certainly not slow. It’s good that no one was coming towards us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The closer we got to the ski arena, the foggier and more uncomfortable it became. As we walked across the large paid car park to the entrance, I was already mourning the warm car a little and pulled my jacket further closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In winter, the ski arena offers an FIS-certified 7.5-kilometre network of cross-country ski trails, some of which can be illuminated. In summer, there is a roller skiing track of about 6.2 kilometres. In addition, there is also a shooting range for air rifle and small bore shooters, which is directly connected to the cross-country skiing\/roller skiing network. The shooting ranges could only be guessed at in this weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even before the young athletes started competing, we were able to watch the “warm-up roll”. To ensure equal opportunities as much as possible, the athletes were not allowed to use their roller skis. There was uniform material, which not everyone liked, according to the participants’ comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At first, we stood “kindly” on a terrace and watched, until we realised that you can walk along areas of the track on trails. At one point we could even cross the track and stand on a bridge, which is integrated into the cross-country skiing network in winter. From there we could see the athletes rolling up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Nordic combined, the start time of the runners is determined after the jumping on the basis of the distances and the distances to each other. The longest jumper starts his round first and is followed by the other skiers. In this way, jumpers who are worse, but perhaps good runners, have the opportunity to catch up. In this competition, too, smaller groups formed quickly and raced along the course together at a crazy speed. In the middle of the action were also some young women, who do not organise their own competitions in this age group and this level of performance (there are probably too few female starters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The roller ski competition was over after less than 30 minutes, we were completely frozen and happy to be able to walk downhill back to Oberwiesenthal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Oberwiesenthal is one of Germany’s winter sports resorts, where top athletes hold their competitions and of course train.
