G\u00f6rlitz not only has a beautiful old town, but also two geographical features to offer. And quite honestly – I wouldn’t have known it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Why does the sun rise earlier in G\u00f6rlitz than in other German cities?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do you know the german saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eIm Osten geht die Sonne auf,
im S\u00fcden h\u00e4lt sie Mittagslauf,
im Westen will sie untergehn,
im Norden ist sie nie zu sehn.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In the east the sun rises,
in the south it holds its noon course,
in the west it wants to set,
in the north it is never to be seen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s how I learned about the course of the sun when I was at school. And during my visit to G\u00f6rlitz, I realised – I am in the German city where the sun rises first!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G\u00f6rlitz is the easternmost city in Germany and this is clearly reflected in the sunrise times:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
