A relaxing time out on the water can be experienced on an Odra boat trip. Various tours are offered by Uncle Helmut from Frankfurt (Oder), which of course also offer a view of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
To be able to travel on the Odra river by boat, you need a ship with a shallow draft. Often the water level of the river is so low that large ships find it very difficult to navigate. Over the years, ideal dimensions have emerged that can be used at almost any water level. One of these ships is the Breslau Ma\u00dfkahn (52m long, 8m wide, 500t payload) named F\u00fcsilier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
It was Uncle Helmut who owned such a barge until it was forcibly expropriated by the GDR government. Until 1982, the barge was still moved in the traditional way on the Odra, it did not have its own drive. It was driven downstream and upstream by a tugboat. This was initially equipped with a steam engine and later with a diesel engine. In 1982, this type of operation became obsolete and Uncle Helmut was the last tugboat captain with his traditional barge on the Odra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The love of inland navigation has remained in the family and so today’s ship owner Dirk Triebler and his wife decided to follow in Uncle Helmut’s footsteps and offer boat trips on the Oder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the picnic basket on Odra boat trip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Once a week there is the possibility of an afternoon trip to Lebus. The two-hour stay in the small town can be enjoyed with a cosy picnic. The fully packed basket can be booked in advance and is then already on the boat when it departs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The ship was already waiting for us at the jetty “Am Holzmarkt”. Punctually at 1 p.m. the captain untied the mooring ropes and cast off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A maximum of 60 guests can travel on the ship. The ship has a roof and the sides were partially open during our trip. In the front, at the unroofed bow, there is a seat for about 4 people. The stern cannot be entered; this is where the captain’s steering position is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
After the boat had left, we passed under the city bridge that connects Frankfurt (Oder) with S\u0142ubice. At first we could still see a few houses from both cities, but soon the view to the river bank changed. Up to Lebus, we would see the Odra floodplains, river groynes and pure nature. Reeds grow here on the bank, and now and then you can see the meadows and fields in the hinterland. If you look closely, you will see herons standing on the riverbank, which take to the air as soon as the ship approaches and look for a safe place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
It’s a leisurely one-hour ride that slowed us down and brought us closer to the beauty of the Odra region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Arrival in Lebus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Lebus is about 10 kilometres downstream from Frankfurt (Oder). The excursion boat anchors in a small bay near the Anglerheim (restaurant). Now you have two hours to stretch your legs on land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Some of our fellow travellers were drawn to the nearby restaurant for lunch, others had picnic baskets just like us and retreated to the shade under a tree. We set off with our picnic basket to explore the place and find a very special picnic spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
What you should know about Lebus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Until the founding of Frankfurt (Oder), Lebus was the undisputed centre in the Land Lebus. The town lies on a small ridge above the Odra River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Archaeological finds could prove that the settlement dates back to the Bronze Age. However, there is also evidence that the fortified sites were abandoned again. After the Germanic tribes had left during the migration of peoples, the Slavs came to the region in the 9th century. During this time, the Lebuzzi tribe built a new fortification on the hill on the Odra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
In the following years, the fortress played an important role in securing the trade routes that crossed here at one of the best fords across the Oder. Later, a cathedral church was built and Lebus became the seat of the bishopric. Around 1226, Henry I granted Lebus town charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 13th century, the Ascanians ruled the region. During this time they founded Frankfurt and Lebus fell into insignificance. The bishop’s seat was moved to G\u00f6ritz (Odra). The secularisation of 1555 marked the beginning of the town’s further decline. The castle fell into disrepair, buildings burnt down and were not replaced, and in 1765 the last remnants of the castle complex were demolished. Since the 18th century, the town of Lebus has only been a settlement with a village character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the Second World War, the war in the Seelow Heights almost completely destroyed the village. Reconstruction succeeded in the 1950\/60s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Scientific excavations began on the Burgberg in the 1970s, which revealed a great deal about the history of the region. In August 2003, the largest Late Bronze Age find in the Odra region was made in Lebus. More than 100 bronze axes of different categories and origins were discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The castle complex<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
We were first drawn up to the castle hill. Directly behind the church, a path begins that leads up an incline. The short climb is worth it, from up there you have a dreamlike view of the Odra and the Odra meadows on the Polish side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The castle hill, which was redesigned in 2012, is also located here. The foundation walls of the former castle were rebuilt from steel elements. You can now walk through them and read about the history of the castle on information boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
We also found a table and benches up there in the shade where we could spread out the picnic we had brought with us. We were completely alone on the castle hill, had delicious food and something to drink. Time flew and all too soon we had to head back towards the ship so that we wouldn’t miss the departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
On the way back, we passed the village’s Protestant church and discovered a stork’s nest with a youngster directly in front of it. We entered the church via a small courtyard that connects to the parish hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We then returned to the ship’s mooring to continue our Odra boat trip back to Frankfurt (Oder).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The return trip is against the current and therefore takes twice as long as the outward trip. This gives you plenty of time to drink something cool and look at the beautiful landscape. Every now and then you spot a heron or geese. If the engine didn’t make a noise, the gentle rocking of the boat could almost lull you to sleep. Nature slows down the otherwise hectic life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Around 5:30 p.m., the skyline of Frankfurt (Oder) slowly appeared on the shore and at 6 p.m. Captain Dirk Triebler and his ship docked again at the city’s pier. For us, the Odra boat trip with the picnic basket, a wonderful excursion on the water and on land, a successful afternoon ended far too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
