If you would like to visit a museum in Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Gustav Lübcke Museum is the place to go. The museum of cultural history is located near the main train station and shows, in addition to its permanent exhibition, always changing temporary exhibitions.

Origin of the museum

In 1886, some citizens of Hamm founded a mummy association. Shortly before, 50 mummies had been discovered in Deir el-Bahari, Egypt. The members of the association were enthusiastic about the topic “Ancient Egypt” and the mummies. Their wish was to acquire a mummy and exhibit it in Hamm.

Funds were collected, contacts were made and finally a mummy from the 22nd/23rd dynasty was acquired and brought to Hamm. In addition, it was possible to buy a photo album with pictures of other mummies, which are used as a basis for research until today.

"Blick

After the citizens of Hammer achieved their goal, the association disbanded and donated the mummy to the city’s museum association, which had also been founded in 1886.

Initially, the mummy was displayed in a room of an inn, later in the town hall. In 1890, the Museum Association was able to open the Municipal Museum in two rented rooms. Until today there is the Museum Association, which still cooperates with the museum.

Who was Gustav Lübcke?

Gustav Lübke was an art dealer and collector. He transferred his collection to the city of Hamm in 1917. In doing so, he expanded the existing collection of the Städtisches Museum. The focus of Lübke’s collection consisted of European arts and crafts from the Middle Ages to the present.

"Gustav

The collection was so extensive that it still forms the basis of the museum collection today. He concluded a contract with the city which, in addition to the donation, also stipulated the city’s obligation not to sell the collection and an annual annuity to him or his wife for life. The city also had to provide suitable exhibition rooms and staff.

For several years, Lübcke was also the director of the museum. After his death in 1925, the museum received its name, Gustav Lübcke Museum.

Ludwig Bänfer, who had previously worked as an assistant for Lübcke, took over the museum management. His focus was on prehistory and early history and the preservation of archaeological monuments. During his time as museum director, he was able to add some important exhibits on regional history to the collection and he strengthened the museum’s focus on local history. His political views also influenced the museum during the National Socialist period. He was able to keep the museum running until the beginning of 1944. When the air raids on Hamm became stronger, the museum was closed and an attempt was made to save as many of the collection items as possible. Unfortunately, among the losses of the war was the “Hammer Mummy”, of which only one photo has survived.

What can you see at the Gustav Lübcke Museum?

The Gustav Lübcke Museum is the only museum institution in the city. They offer a wide range of exhibitions.

"Museum

The new building from 1993 is impressive, and the architecture inside is already worth seeing. The five departments of the museum can be reached via wide ramps in the entrance hall.

The individual areas show cultural-historical objects from the Stone Age to the present. Especially the development of the cultural area of Westphalia is always in focus and the city history of Hamm is presented in detail.

"Mumie

Particularly worth seeing is the department dealing with the culture of Ancient Egypt. Here you can find exhibits that have been in the museum since its founding. The collection, of which only a small part is exhibited, is the second largest Egyptian collection in North Rhine-Westphalia. In total, there are about 1,200 objects in the Ancient Egypt Collection.

The lost “Hammer Mummy” could only almost be replaced in 1963 by a painted anthropomorphic mummy coffin of the Peti-Imen-menu from the time of the 25th Dynasty. Modern technology, however, made it possible to create an “almost” equivalent replacement. A black-and-white photograph showing the mummy’s appearance was the template for a 3D replica, which is also on display in the exhibition.

Special exhibition

When I visited the museum, the special exhibition “Treffpunkt Kneipe – Hammer Lokalgeschichten” was taking place.

"Sonderausstellung

In the special exhibition in the Gustav Lübcke Museum everything revolves around the theme of pubs, beer, drinks, club life in the pub. There are reports about stagecoach pubs, excursion pubs, neighborhood pubs, workers’ pubs and pubs for the upscale public. Pubs had and still have the function not only to provide people with drinks. They also served, for example, as gymnasiums, singing rooms, clubhouses, polling stations, dance halls, movie theaters, company meeting halls or party halls.
