Many visitors associate Zwickau with cars and Robert Schumann. The city has much more to offer and so we went on a city tour in Zwickau.

We have really seen a lot. Our 11 places in Zwickau that you should have seen we present here in no particular order.

1. Priests’ Houses

Walking around St.Mary’s Cathedral, you can see the priests’ houses. They are among the oldest urban residential buildings still preserved in Germany.

"Priesterhäuser

Originally 12 houses were built in the 13th century and, as the name suggests, the clergy of the neighboring church lived here. It was not until the Reformation that other church servants, such as organists and bell-ringers, moved into the houses. The teachers of the Latin school were also allowed to live in the priests’ houses.

Today, four of the historic priests’ houses house the Museum of Urban and Cultural History. Unfortunately, it was closed during our visit to Zwickau and so we could not visit the exhibition on the city’s history.

2. Cathedral St.Mary

From the outside we could see the impressive St.Marien Cathedral in Zwickau. The first church on this site was built in the 12th century and between 1453 and 1565 it was rebuilt in late Gothic style. Later, the Baroque tower domes were added. Thus, the church reached a height of 88 meters. It is said to be the highest building in the city.

"Dom

Robert Schumann was baptized in this church and it was also here that he made his first public appearance. Schumann was just 11 years old when he participated as a pianist in the performance of an oratorio.

3. Main market with the Gewandhaus Zwickau

One of the most beautiful buildings I have seen in Zwickau is the Renaissance building of the Gewandhaus. Operas, operettas, musicals, ballet and drama have been performed here since the 19th century.

Originally, from 1522 to 1525, the clothiers’ guild used the present Gewandhaus as a representative building. On the second floor there was a large hall, which was used as a sales room for clothiers, furriers, shoemakers and other craftsmen at fairs. The garrison used the hall as a military hospital in times of war and as a drill hall in times of peace.

"Gewandhaus

In 1812, the hall was divided by newly inserted partition walls, creating a smaller concert hall and a larger theater hall. In 1882/84, the theater had to close due to stricter safety regulations and was rebuilt. In the following decades, further reconstructions followed, which became necessary due to changed regulations or progressive modernization. Since 1987, there has been a puppet theater in an extension building, which appeals especially to children.

4. Robert Schumann Museum and Robert Schumann Monument

Zwickau is the birthplace of Robert Schumann. People are rightly particularly proud that the famous composer discovered the light of day here.

"Robert

For many years, plans were made to erect a monument to the artist in Zwickau. Money was raised and a design competition was announced. Finally, in 1901, the time had come. The Robert Schumann monument could be inaugurated. In the following years it moved several times and found its present location on the main market square in 1993. There it stands within sight of the Gewandhaus.

"Blick

Not far away is the birthplace of Robert Schumann, which today houses a museum about him. We visited the museum and wrote about it in the article “Robert Schumann in Zwickau”. A really impressive museum that you should have seen not only as a music lover.

5. Walk along the Mulde River – Miner on the Mulde Cycle Path, Powder Tower, Paradise Bridge

Only a few steps away from the main market, the Mulde River flows through the city. A hiking and biking trail runs here in a landscaped park built over a federal highway.

The hiking trail is a section of the supra-regional Luther and Jacob’s Trail. The bike trail is a section of the 268 km Mulden Bike Trail, which runs from the Ore Mountains to Bad Düben.

"Brücke

The Paradise Bridge immediately caught our eye. This has been crossing the Zwickauer Mulde since 1900. At 69 meters long and 12 meters wide, the riveted steel construction is one of Zwickau’s landmarks. The bridge is considered the “little sister” of Dresden’s “Blue Wonder” because it was built by the same metal supplier.

"Bergarbeiter

A monument entitled “Remembrance – It’s closing time – Shift in the shaft” commemorates coal mining in the Zwickau coalfield.

"Pulverturm

At the edge of the green area stands the Powder Tower with a small remnant of the old city wall. It is the last piece of the old fortification that once surrounded Zwickau. As the name suggests, the powder tower was used to store gunpowder.

6. Ostenstein Castle with old city fortification

Zwickau also once had a city castle. Ostenstein Castle was rebuilt after a fire in 1403. A Renaissance castle was built, which was converted into a penal institution in 1775. The most famous prisoners were certainly August Bebel and Karl May, who served their time here. The building was used as a prison until 1962, after which it stood empty for a long time and was in danger of falling into disrepair.

"Schloss

In 2008, the castle was renovated and today it is used as a residential facility for senior citizens.

You can walk through the former castle courtyard and get a small impression.

7. Grain House

What an impressive building! Right next to the Ostenstein Castle stands a granary built in 1481. The roof structure from 1480 has almost been preserved. It once housed 6 granary floors, but today there are only 5 floors. The building has been used very differently over the years: Granary, armory, prison, warehouse and office building. Since the renovation of 2014, the granary houses one of the most modern libraries in Saxony.

"Kornhaus"

8. Johannisbad in Zwickau

Johannisbad is certainly the most impressive swimming pool I have seen so far. We had the opportunity to take a closer look at the beautiful architecture of the building. Unfortunately, swimming was not possible during our visit, but I can imagine to make up for that one day. If you want to learn more about the swimming pool, you should have a look at our article “Johannisbad – swimming in the historic swimming pool”.

"Johannisbad"

9. Trabant Denkmal

Zwickau is also an automobile city. This is where the Trabant was developed and built. The Trabi is a cult vehicle for many people today. What a sound (and stench) it was when the two-stroke drove in front of you.

"Trabi

Since 1998, a Trabant memorial commemorates the cult vehicle.

10. August Horch Museum

To stay on the subject of cars. The August Horch Museum in Zwickau is home to dream automobiles from many years. From racing cars to luxury sedans, from Horch automobiles to Audi – one beautiful and interesting car stands here next to the next car. Even though I am not one of the “car crazy people”, this visit was really indescribably beautiful.

"Rennwagen

You can read about our visit in our article “Cars everywhere cars: the automobile museum in Zwickau”.

11. Restaurant Brauhaus Zwickau

After so much sightseeing in Zwickau, we were drawn to a brewery located right next to the priests’ houses. You can enjoy freshly brewed beer in a large beer garden or in the cozy restaurant. For the physical well-being is also provided, the menu was varied and we tasted it.

"Zwickauer
