The visitor highlight in Schwerin is the beautiful castle. The whole year over thousands of visitors from all over the world come here and certainly many are just as speechless as I was when I could take a first look at the castle Schwerin at the setting sun.
A bit like a Disney castle, a movie set or fairy tale castle so it seems to me – unreal and fantastically luminous it stands on the castle island and just waiting to be discovered.

A visit to Schwerin Castle

The construction of the castle began in the 16th century under Johann Albrecht I.
Many years and many builders later, the magnificent building from the 19th century was finally finished. Today, of course, you can visit the castle. On the one hand there is the possibility to discover the castle museum. With a special guided tour it is also possible to climb to the roof of the castle. But you can also stroll leisurely through the castle park and the castle garden. We were quite a long time in, on and around the castle in Schwerin and have discovered some interesting places.

"Abendstimmung

Castle Church

Somewhat hidden in the courtyard is the entrance to the castle church, which is located on the north side of the castle. From the outside, you can only see the choir annex and the bell tower, otherwise the church is completely integrated into the castle building.
A visit is only possible on very specific dates, the exact times can be found on the
website. But you can of course attend a service in the church, which is held here regularly.

"Eingang

After opening the large door, we climb a few steps and stand in a spacious nave. This was built in 1560-1563 in Renaissance style. In the 19th century, the church was reworked and expanded in neo-Gothic style.

"Schlosskirche

Special mention should be made of the ceiling design, which was blue with golden stars, following the trend of the time. The ceiling was restored in the course of a sponsorship campaign. Under the motto “Buy a star”, the 8758 stars on the church ceiling were sold. For the buyers there was of course a certificate with the exact location of the star and with the purchase of 10 stars one could be immortalized on a sponsor plaque at the entrance of the castle. The stars were sold out quickly and the money could be put into the restoration of the ceiling.

On the way on the roof of Schwerin Castle

We start our discovery tour in Schwerin Castle a bit unusual, we climb on the roof of the castle!

"unter

Many stairs lead us first to the open arched hall above the entrance to the palace. Here stands a monumental equestrian statue of Prince Nikot. A Berlin sculptor (Christian Genschow) designed the statue in 1855 so that it could adorn the front facade of the palace. Even from below, the statue looks huge. If you stand right next to it and look up, you can see many detailed elements, especially on the horse. Really very beautifully designed. From here you already have a nice view of the castle bridge and I was curious how only the view would be when we should climb even higher.

"Blick

We went up more stairs until we finally reached an open level in the dome of the castle. From here, a spiral staircase led up a bit higher still, opening up a dreamlike view of Schwerin and the lakeland for us.

"Dach

If you then look a little closer at the castle building, you will discover many small and large details. We weren’t quite sure about the numbers, but Schwerin Castle is said to have 15 towers, 24 chimneys and over 300 spires/peaks/obelisks. We didn’t have time to recount, because we wanted to take a little tour on the roof of the castle. Here you can experience the castle and the courtyard from above on permanently installed paths. I could have spent forever more here – what unique impressions and especially great photo spots that you can discover here. But unfortunately we had to move on, the castle is large and there is much to see.

"Tour

Schwerin Castle – Seat of the Parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Not all areas of the castle are always accessible to visitors without restrictions. For example, the seat of the state parliament is located here and there are special security regulations for this area. We were able to take a brief look into the conference hall from a visitor’s gallery. There was just a meeting of doctors who had rented the converted former banquet hall.
Anyone who wanted to could attend sessions of the state parliament as a visitor. What I found astonishing, however, is that you can only listen to one hour of debate and then have to vacate your seat for the next visitor. It’s a shame when you have a real interest in a topic and then can’t follow all the opinions.

From the castle museum and the naughty angel

The castle museum is the real center of attraction for many tourists. Countless groups are ushered through here by their guides on a “fast-track” basis, learning the essentials about the history of the ruling family, the use of the rooms and the history of Schwerin.

"Schlossmuseum

Is it worth visiting the museum now?
I think it is worth it. You can explore the 30 rooms of the museum without a guided tour and see a lot. From the former “waiting area” with the ancestral gallery, the audience hall to the library or the flower room, you can discover a lot.
It’s definitely worth taking a closer look and then you’ll also discover the cheeky angel. There is exactly one angel in a row of many little angels, who cheekily sticks his tongue out at the visitors. Have fun searching!

"Engel

Three rooms within the castle museum have not been restored yet. Here you can still discover traces from GDR times, when the castle housed a school for educators. Did the ghost of the castle appear to the teachers?

Castle ghost of Schwerin – legend of the Petermännchen

There are numerous legends (about 500) about the castle ghost in Schwerin Castle. The Petermännchen, a small sinister-looking guy, is said to have his home in Schwerin Castle. One of the legends tells that in the past there was a temple castle of a pagan god exactly at the place where the castle in Schwerin stands today. This god was worshipped in the whole area, but fled to the depths of the sea when the Christians came to the country. When the old sanctuary fell into disrepair and the faithful turned their backs on the pagan lord and moved to Petersberg, only the Petermännchen remained in its old place. According to reports, there are vaults in the castle with long corridors connecting the Petersberg. Here the Petermännchen is said to have worked as a blacksmith.

"Petermännchen

The Petermännchen is active as a guardian and watchman of the castle. Thus, he is said to have woken up the soldiers falling asleep from exhaustion during their watch and thus saved them from punishment. The little man is also said to have punished and driven away thieves and intruders with cruel jokes and nocturnal noises. According to legend, Wallenstein (a Bohemian general and politician) suffered so much from the Petermännchen that he left the castle in Schwerin after just one night and preferred to live in Güstrow.

How exactly the Petermännchen looks, is not exactly sure. Sometimes it is said to be a medieval horseman, sometimes in a gray robe, and during a death in the ducal family it is said to have been dressed all in black. In any case, he probably carries a sword, a bunch of keys and a lantern.

The last recorded encounter is said to have happened in 1930, when a policeman claims to have seen a figure with a pointed hat in the Burggarten.

In Schwerin, every child knows the Petermännchen. There is even a song about him!
