During my stay in Schwerin I discovered many beautiful places. Certainly only a fraction of what Schwerin has to offer. So a good reason to visit Schwerin again.

1. Walk through the Schelfstadt

The Schelfstadt is a district of Schwerin, located south of the Ziegelinnensee and east of the Pfaffenteich.
The so-called Schelfe already existed in the 11th century. Fishermen who had been driven out of the old town settled here. For many years the area was inhabited, but was never particularly promoted. Later, attempts were made to lure merchants and craftsmen to the run-down area with tax advantages. Thus, in the early 18th century, numerous half-timbered houses and palaces were built, inhabited by noble families and artists. The area became a fashionable residential area.

After reunification, it took a lot of energy and initiative for the Schelfstadt to become attractive again.

"Justizministerium

If you stroll through the district today, you will pass some representative buildings, such as the Neustädtische Palais (seat of the Ministry of Justice of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), and numerous well restored half-timbered houses, for example in Münzstraße. Many small individual stores and craft businesses have now found a home in the Schelfstadt. And so a stroll from store to store is worthwhile.

"Schelfstadt"

2. Schelfkirche St. Nikolai

The Schelfkirche belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of St. Nikolai. The baroque brick church is one of the post-reformation church buildings in Mecklenburg.

"Schelfkirche

From the outside it seems to be a church like there are many churches. But inside it shows something that not many churches have to offer. In the Schelfkirche there is a princely tomb. The church was the burial place of the ducal family until the death of Duchess Ulrike Sophie in 1813. 12 adults and 5 children rest in the crypt. Today you can descend a small staircase in the middle of the nave and look at the coffins through a glass pane.

3. Schwerin marketplace

When strolling through the old town of Schwerin, you are sure to pass the Old Town Market. The large rectangular historic marketplace is located south of the cathedral.

"Marktplatz

The marketplace has existed since the founding of the city and assumed a central importance for the city’s trade.
The city founder Henry the Lion promoted the development of long-distance trade in Schwerin. He granted merchants freedom of duty throughout Saxony and allowed the use of the port of Wismar. In Schwerin, it was only allowed to trade in foodstuffs and handicraft products on the market square, and so many stalls and booths were located there.
In 1651, about 150 houses around the marketplace burned down. The town architect Johann Wedel then redesigned the square. A new baroque town hall and many new half-timbered houses were built around the square. A political, economic and religious center emerged in the city.

Today, the square is visually dominated by the popularly known “columned building”. The house Am Markt 1 was built in 1783-1785 and once served as a market hall. In order not to obstruct the view of the cathedral, the building was only two-story with features from the Baroque, Classicism and the 14 Doric columns. After the market hall was closed in the 1850s, first the police and later the municipal gasworks used the building. Most recently, gastronomic establishments were located here, but they had to close. During our visit, the building was unused.

"Dom

In front of the columned house is the Lion Monument. On a stele there is a lion sculpture, which was erected appropriately for the 800th anniversary of the death of the city’s founder Henry the Lion. Particularly striking are the reliefs on the sides of the column, which show four life episodes of the Saxon duke.

4. Eating cake in Café Prague

Café Prag is just a few steps away from the market square. We took a culinary break here and watched the hustle and bustle on the streets of Schwerin while enjoying a piece of cake and an iced chocolate. How did we like it? Read our article “8 tips for eating out in Schwerin”.

"Essen

5. Schwerin Castle

A visit to the castle is simply part of a visit to Schwerin. We were in, on and around the castle on the road. We explored the castle church, the castle roof, the castle museum and the castle garden. During a great guided tour, we were able to learn about the castle ghost and the love island. If you want to know more about this, it’s best to read our article “Vom Petermännchen und der Liebesinsel – Besuch im Schloss Schwerin”.

"Abendstimmung

Even though the castle in Schwerin is visited by many groups of visitors, the tour is really worth seeing. A tip: at sunset, the castle is illuminated almost like a fairy tale.

6. Mecklenburg State Theater – a guided tour behind the scenes

The Mecklenburg State Theater regularly offers public tours (dates online). During a guided tour, we were not only able to see the theater, but also to take a look behind the scenes.

"Staatstheater

The venue of today’s Mecklenburg State Theater was opened in 1886 as the Grand Ducal Court Theater in the new building after the previous building burned down in 1882. The building was modeled on the Italian Renaissance and was considered one of the most advanced theater buildings in the world at the time. A special feature was that the theater generated its own electric light and had the most modern stage technology.

Today, the theater is a 6-division theater and offers its visitors performances from the areas of musical theater (opera, operetta, musical), drama, ballet, Low German drama, children’s and youth theater and concert. The stalls and the three tiers seat 530 spectators and about 320 employees work in the operation of the theater.

"im

During the tour of the theater, we were not only in front of the stage, but also backstage. There was a lot to see and hear, such as a thunder machine to simulate a thunderstorm. Balls attached to strings lie on a membrane. You drum on the membrane with mallets, the balls start bouncing and the sound is amazingly similar to thunder.

"Donnermaschine

I was particularly impressed by the theater fundus. Here we were able to discover not only stage sets from the various plays. In a large room full of high shelves is a veritable treasure trove of props – how anyone can find anything here is a mystery to me. I had the feeling of having gotten into a wild mess. But I would have liked to rummage around here for a while and certainly discovered one or two “treasures”.

"Theaterfundus

A tour of the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin is definitely worthwhile. It was a great look behind the scenes with many interesting facts and some unexpected insights into the theater world.

7. Schwerin Castle Festival

During the visit to Schwerin, I was lucky enough to be able to visit the castle festival. Every year, the Schwerin Castle Festival takes place directly at and in the Schwerin Castle. For one month, two productions are shown. I was able to experience both plays in 2019 and enjoyed it very much.

"Schlossbühne"

The first visit was in the castle courtyard for the premiere of Cyrano de Bergerac. What a dreamlike setting! The sun was setting, the castle was shining in the last rays of sunlight and Cyrano de Bergerac was writing love letters to Roxane. It was enough to make you go into raptures.

"Theaterspielstätte

The second venue is located on the square between the castle, theater, gallery and lake. Here the ensemble of the Mecklenburg State Theater showed the musical Anatevka in 2019. We had seats in the top row of the built grandstand. The view was really great, you could see every little thing well. Somewhat disturbing I felt the soundscape by the gastronomic stands located on the forecourt and the often not quiet pedestrian traffic on the surrounding streets. A square a little further down would certainly have had just as good a view, but less noise impact from outside. I liked the piece very much, even if the ending was very unexpected and the whole content of the piece kept me thinking for a while.

8. Eat soft ice cream in Schwerin

Not an insider tip, but definitely worth a culinary excursion, is the soft ice cream from ILKA Eis. In addition to the standard chocolate-vanilla variety, there is also a special creation available here every day. If you want to know more about it, you can find more information in our article “8 Tips for Eating in Schwerin”.

"IKLA

9. Vacation in Schwerin – on the way with the raft on the Schwerin lake

If you want to experience something very special, you should spend a few days with a raft on the lakes around Schwerin. During a short trip I got to know the “house raft” and I liked it very much.

"Floß

At the provider Flossurlaub-Schwerin you can rent from May to the end of October 2 rafts for 6 people and a raft for 10 people for trips with overnight accommodation on the water.
You can drive the rafts without a driver’s license, after a briefing alone. The rafts are equipped with a refrigerator, toilet, sufficient storage space, a spacious sitting area and sleeping accommodations. There are 4 deck chairs on board, located on a terrace at the bow of the raft and a bathing ladder offers water lovers the possibility to easily get back on board after a refreshing swim.

"Floß

Unfortunately, we were only briefly on the road with the raft. But it was just fantastically beautiful. Around us, the water glistened in the sunlight, we could watch birds and enjoy the beautiful landscape around the lakes. The clear highlight was certainly the view of Schwerin Castle from the water.

"unterwegs

"Schweriner

While our captain steered the raft, I could look over the water with binoculars. There were many different birds to discover and we even saw a water snake. For a relaxing time on the water, a trip on the raft is the right choice and if you want to be lulled to sleep, you will definitely sleep wonderfully here.
