One of the most interesting hotel facilities I’ve had the pleasure of staying in recently is the Hotel-Restaurant-Café Haffhus near Ueckermünde. I’m not referring to the visual appearance of the entire facility, but primarily to the concept of energy supply for the Hotel Haffhus.

"Hotel

At the end of 1999, with the change of ownership, began the transformation from an 18 room hotel into a self-sufficient hotel business today. Quickly began to renovate and carry out expansion work. For example, a spacious wellness area with swimming pool and saunas, a large playground for children and two new large apartment houses with different room offers were built. The main house was also extended with a conference area, a bowling alley with bar and a library. Gradually, a large and modern complex with 76 rooms was created.

"Hotel

But that is actually nothing unusual. What excited me is found more in the background and is not immediately recognizable at first glance.

Energy concept at Hotel Haffhus

After some extensive research and restructuring, the owner decided to disconnect the entire hotel operation from the public power grid. About 5 million euros were invested and today the operation is completely self-sufficient only with the help of its own electricity generation.

Hotel operation without energy from the public power grid – is that possible?

For me as a guest, only the large photovoltaic systems on some roofs are visible at first. During a tour, the concept was explained to us in more detail. In addition to the use of solar energy, the Haffhus Hotel also uses wood chips to generate energy.

My knowledge in the field of energy generation is rather meager. But nevertheless I found the system, how what interacts with whom to be able to generate enough electricity, very exciting.

For readers interested in technology, some information:

  • Solar plant with 118 kW power on 5 roof surfaces:
mainly intended for electricity generation in summer

  • BHKW with Gas:
They serve as energy generators and provide about 5.5 kW electrical and 14 kW thermal power. The machines can be used quickly and at short notice and reach full power in less than 2 minutes. If in summer the energy production by the sun is not sufficient, the machines are switched on. In the year, about 10% of the total energy is produced by the CHPs with gas.

  • Woodchip heating:
produces heat and electricity from regionally supplied wood chips. These are converted into wood gas in a process which, in simple terms, drives a generator that produces electricity (approx. 20 kW/h). The electricity is either consumed directly or fed into the battery storage. The heat generated within the process is fed into the heating process.

  • Battery storage system
Energy has to be stored somewhere. The hotel’s battery storage can store about 500 kW of electricity. This is roughly equivalent to the hotel’s daily demand. The plan is to expand the capacity.

  • Heat pump:
The heat pumps provide a thermal output of 150kW with an electrical output of 40kW.

  • Heat and cold reservoirs:
In the hotel there are 7 buffer tanks with heating rods that can heat thousands of liters of water. Thus, excess energy can be used wisely for other areas.

  • Extensive hardware for automation and monitoring of energy demand

The topic of energy consumption is writ large throughout the facility. This also means that employees and guests have access to charging stations for their cars. These are also operated only with self-produced electricity.

How does the guest learn about energy consumption?

Not only the guest, but also all employees in the house can be constantly informed about the energy consumption of the facility.

    "Infos

For example, housekeeping learns whether enough electricity is currently being produced so that the washing machines and ironers can work without any problems.
The guest can log into the energy control area via a tablet in the room and follow the current development. For example, they can see when the greatest demand for energy exists and, if necessary, they can forego charging the car and carry it out at a different time.

I found it very interesting and spent some time looking at the data.

    My stay at Hotel Haffhus

My room was in one of the outbuildings on the third floor. From the balcony I could even catch a glimpse of the Szczecin Lagoon.

    "Blick

The room was large, nicely furnished with a small bathroom with shower. The Wi-Fi reception worked without any problems, was sufficiently fast and stable.

    "Hotelzimmer

For breakfast, you have to go to the main house, where the reception, the restaurant and the wellness area are located. In good weather, you can enjoy your morning coffee or tea on a terrace. I did not miss anything in the selection of breakfast and started the day happily.

    "Reflexionen

A little tip: Before breakfast, it’s worth taking a look at the Szczecin Lagoon. I did not experience the sunrise, but the calm water with fantastic reflections is well worth a visit.

    "Morgens

If you like to leave your car at home, you can rent bikes and eBikes at Hotel Haffhus. We spent a morning on the road with eBikes and took a bike tour to Altwarp. Here you can not only eat delicious fish sandwiches, but also explore a large inland dune landscape.

I really enjoyed the two nights at Hotel Haffhus. I would have liked to spend more time there and use the wellness area extensively. But that can be made up for.
