The Baños Califales are the remains of Arab baths of the Caliph in Cordoba, which are one of the most popular sights of the city. You can visit them and feel a little bit like in 1000 + 1 nights.

The Caliph’s baths were among the most important baths in the city. Here the caliph and his entourage could perform their ablutions and physical cleansings, which are a part of Muslim life. Sometimes he also used the stay in the baths for political talks.

"Baños

Emergence of the baths of the caliph

In the 10th century, the baths were built by order of the Caliph al-Hakam II and belong to the old Andalusian Alcazar in Córdoba. The baths consist of several rooms with ashlar walls.

The entrance at that time was in front of a portico and the changing room. Next to the room for changing there was a latrine and a corridor that led to other areas of the palace.

"Córdoba"

The other main rooms formed the actual baths. These were arranged in the style of Roman baths in three rooms with different temperatures. The cold, warm and hot rooms were not visible from the outside. Each room had a different function and one passed through them one after the other.

During the reign of the Sevillian Taifa of Córdoba (1070-91), a new entrance hall with portico was built next to the already existing bath. In addition, a landscaped area was created in front, divided into sections by a fountain and small canals. In the 12th century, with the beginning of the Almohad Empire, new baths were built in the western part of the city. The Caliph’s bath was rebuilt and the previous reception hall was turned into an area for changing clothes.

After Cordoba was conquered by the Christians (1328), Alfonso XI decided to put the baths underground and build a large square on the site. Today there is evidence that by 1691 the baths had been rediscovered. Records have been found in which permission is asked to use a vault (which no longer exists today), in the construction of a church. After that, the facility fell into oblivion again.

"Baños

When building on the Campo Santo de los Mártires in 1903, construction workers accidentally found the remains of the Caliph’s bath. Gradually, scientists uncovered the ruins and since 1994 the cultural site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Baños Califales – a visit

To enter the baths of the caliph, one goes down a ramp at the edge of the square. A rather unspectacular entrance awaits the visitor. The entrance area rather reminds of a museum entrance, I miss the flair of an Arab bath here in vain.

"Museumseingang

In the former rooms, which visitors to the baths used to change in those days, there is now a small film room. Here, the history of the facility is explained (albeit in Spanish).

"Ausstellung

From there you enter the heart of the Baños Califales.

As a rule, visitors to the Arab baths were not immersed in water, but more emphasis was placed on steam, sweating and scrubbing. Everyone went through rooms with different temperatures. These rooms can also be seen today in the ruins of the Baños Califales. I must admit, however, that I would have expected to see a little more, to be able to imagine everything even better. However, when I think about it in retrospect, the historical site shows the bath as it was found.

"Gefäß

The cold room (bayt al-barid)

In the cold room, which the bath visitor visited both at the beginning and at the end, the spiritual renewal or purification took place. The visitor had at his disposal in this room some washbasins and also a latrine. He entered the bath “dressed” only with towels on “alcorques”, which are shoes with cork soles.

"Baños

Excavations have found original tiles from the floor of the cold room of the Almohad baths from the 12th century. They also showed that a central basin decorated with green and white tiles and a rest room had been created.

The warm room (bayt al-wastany)

The warm room was the room where the visitor stayed the longest. Therefore, this room was usually the largest and particularly richly furnished. The room in the Baños Califales was square and decorated with murals in red ocher and marble plinths. Often the Caliph received his visitors here.

"Baños

In this room, the caliph received his personal hygiene and daily care, such as massages, a shave and hair care.

This room impressed me the most during our tour, because here I could imagine how magnificent the bath must have been once.

The hot room (bayt al-sajun)

The last room was the hot room. This room has a square floor plan and shows the characteristic eight-pointed star vault with skylights supported by round arches on marble capitals and columns. The floor was also made of white marble.

"Deckengestaltung

Adjacent to this room were two other smaller rooms in which there were two washbasins. These were not for washing hands as we do today. One was more the size of a bathtub, while the other was more like a shower.

There were tunnels under the floor. Heat was generated in a furnace, which was conducted through these galleries and thus heated the room. In addition, ceramic pipes led water that was heated by the heat through the room.
