The sky is almost cloudless, the sun is burning and there is a huge dust on the large parking lot when we arrive at Cape Kaliakra. We are at the most famous cape in Bulgaria on the northern Black Sea coast, one of the places that Bulgarians and tourists love to visit again and again.

Legends around Cape Kaliakra

Two legends are told about events at this place.

The legend of the 40 girls

When the Ottomans conquered the country in the 15th century, they also invaded the villages near the sea. It is said that there lived 40 girls who were among the most beautiful women in the country. The Ottoman warriors wanted to keep these girls for themselves and took them to a cave near the cape.

The warriors were sure that the young women could not escape and left the cave to light a fire.

"Steilküste

One woman, named Kaliakra, was particularly brave and did not want to surrender to her fate. She convinced the other women to jump into the sea with her to escape the Ottomans. Not all the women were brave and they feared death and punishment if they stayed behind. So they decided to braid their hair together so that none would be left behind.

The next morning, at sunrise, the women appeared on the cliff in their white robes, hair braided together and holding hands. The Ottomans were too surprised and could not stop the 40 women from jumping into the sea.

Later, this rock was called Kaliakra, after the woman who managed to keep the dignity of the Bulgarian girls untouched.

"Kap

The legend of St.Nicolas

The second legend is about St. Nicolas.

He too was persecuted by the Ottomans, but instead of giving up, he ran to the seashore and prayed to God for help.

God answered his prayer.

When the land stopped and the saint was about to throw himself to his death from the cliff, the solid ground stretched forward and gave him support. The further St. Nicola ran, the more the cliff enlarged.

"Kap

After a while, however, he got tired and ran slower and slower. The Ottomans finally captured him and killed him on the spot. The land stopped growing supernaturally.

Cape Kaliakra, the result of this miracle, still stands today. The saint is said to have been buried at its end. A small white chapel stands there today.

And what is the history of Cape Kaliakra really like?

Since ancient times there was a fortress along the Via Pontica on this rocky point. Among the Thracians it was called Tirisis, among the Romans Akra and among the Byzantines Akres Kastelum. In the Middle Ages, the strategically important fortress was called Kaliakra and served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 13th century.

"Reste

The region around Cape Kaliakra has always been a point of contention between the surrounding regions and the great powers with an interest in the Black Sea. For this reason the cape was fortified several times. The oldest fortifications date back to the Thracians and were built around the 4th century BC. Later the Greeks took over the region, followed by over 200 years of Roman rule.

With the division of the Roman Empire, the region became part of the Byzantine Empire. In the 13th century, an autonomous state emerged for a short time under Prince Dobrotitsch. The region got its name from this prince. Later Byzantium was restored, but soon fell to the Ottomans, who were defeated by Russian warships under Admiral Ushakov in the naval battle of Cape Kaliakra in 1791.

"Kap

From 1878 to 1913 Kaliakra belonged to Bulgaria, in the period from 1913 to 1940 it was part of Romania. Only after the end of the Second World War the rocky spur rejoined Bulgaria and was used by the Soviet Union within the Warsaw Pact.

In 1988, the construction of a large broadcasting facility for medium-wave broadcasting began, but it was never put into operation as planned.

"militärische

In 2006, to commemorate the victory of 1791, the Ushakov Monument was inaugurated at Cape Kaliakra.

Visit to Cape Kaliakra

An access road leads to a parking lot directly at the top of the cliff. The visit is subject to a fee and the entrance fee is paid directly at the parking lot entrance.

But even before I can go on a discovery tour, I notice an imposing monument at the parking lot.

Uschakow-monument

In 2006, the Ushakov Monument was erected at Cape Kaliakra. It is dedicated to the 215th anniversary of the victory in the naval battle of Kaliakra in 1791. In this battle during the Russo-Turkish War from 1787 to 1791, Admiral Fyodor Ushakov defeated the Turkish fleet of Russian warships.

Bulgarian sculptor Nikola Bogdanov designed and created the monument. In 1968, the 3-meter high base relief with the Cyrillic inscription “Ф.Ушаков. 1791 г.” (“F.F. Ushakov, 1791”).

"Denkmal

The 6-meter high white concrete statue has a total height of 8 meters. The statue depicts the Russian admiral Fyodor Ushakov. It is richly detailed and conveys an impressive presence. In 2011, a seven-bay colonnade with octagonal pillars was built behind the statue. From its entablature hang 18 bells, each bearing the name of one of the 18 Russian warships involved in the battle.

Way to the top of the cape

From the parking lot on a path leads to the top of the cape. The meadows in lush green, some blooming flowers and between them remains of some walls of buildings from the past, what a beautiful harmonious picture. Every now and then I discover a sign that assigns a function to the building remnant, such as a “Roman bath”.

"Überreste

But the highlight for me is the gigantic view. The steep reddish rock faces rise between 50 and 60 meters from the sea. Over thousands of years, the surf has dug holes and entire caves into the rock. Even though the Black Sea is calm on this day, the waves break on the coast. What a spectacle it must be when the wind blows stronger and high waves thunder against it!

Kaliakra is one of the first protected areas in Bulgaria. In 1941 the government declared the cape a nature reserve. Until today several endangered bird species nest here. The flora is represented by several steppe plants, which are unique for Bulgaria.

"Bulgarische

If you follow the path, you will pass a cave. Today there is a museum here. The visit is free of charge, only those who want to take pictures have to pay something. I found the model of Cape Kaliakra particularly interesting. Only with the help of this representation I became aware of the dimension of the area.

When we reach the top of the cape, I also discover the small chapel of St. Nicola. Right next to it, a staircase leads down to a small viewing platform. Here is certainly the most photographed rock window of the region.

"Bulgarien

Admittedly, the view is dreamlike. But you should also look a little deeper down and not only in the distance. There I discover steps carved into the rock, which once allowed access to the cliff top from the water. It’s a pity that this path is no longer usable today. A view up from down there must be impressive.

"Treppen

Restaurant tip

After a trip to Cape Kaliakra, the way to Dalboka The Mussel Farm is not far. This is reached via a narrow and very steep access road. There are only a few parking spaces in front of the restaurant. Those who are good on foot should rather park the car further up the road and walk.

"Muschelfarm

The selection of shellfish dishes is large. I was not aware of how different the shellfish can taste. My favorite was the “spicy” mussels, which are served in a spicy sauce.

The visit to Cape Kaliakra took place during a press trip to Albena.
