Old books and libraries have an almost magical attraction for us. In Weimar there is a library that you simply have to see. The Duchess Anna Amalia Library is certainly one of the most beautiful libraries in Germany.

The beginnings of today’s extensive book collection date back to 1547. After the Weimar court received 500 books from the property of the extinct collateral line of Saxe-Jena in 1691, Duke Wilhem Ernst took this as an opportunity to systematically build up his library. Therefore, the year 1691 is considered the official year of foundation. It was only on the occasion of its 300th anniversary that it was named the Duchess Anna Amalia Library. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site “Classical Weimar” since 1998.

Who was Anna Amalia?

Anna Amalia of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was born in Wolfenbüttel on 24 October 1739. She was born in Wolfenbüttel Palace as the fifth of thirteen children of the ducal couple and received an education befitting her status as a princess.

"Bueste

At the age of 16 she was married to Duke Ernst August II. Constantin of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach, to whom she gave two sons. Her husband died at an early age and according to her will, Anna Amalia was the chief guardian of the duchies of Weimar and Eisenach until they came of age.

Anna Amalia did not have an easy time during this period. The Seven Years’ War and a lavish court kept her finances dwindling. She tried in vain to implement ideas to reform the existing structures. Against all resistance, she brought Goethe to Weimar, who finally succeeded in bringing order to the finances.

As a lover of the arts, Anna Amalia liked to invite people to social events such as theatre performances, readings or concerts. She was also active as a writer and wrote articles for the private handwritten journal of Tiefurt, which appeared from 1781-84. Her varied interests led her to learn different languages, to take drawing lessons and to discover new things on her travels.

Anna Amalia died in Weimar in April 1807 and was buried in the town church.

A library is being created

Duke Wilhelm Ernst had collected about 1400 books around 1691. In 1712, he decided to make them available to the learned public, i.e. mainly scientists, in a library. He founded the Ducal Library in Weimar. By 1722, the book collection had increased to about 20,000 books, which at that time were still housed in the Residence Palace.

"Weimar

As the new sovereign, Anna Amalia’s son (Duke Carl August) further expanded the library, which by then was located in the Green Palace. It was he who entrusted Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with the supervision of the library. Goethe managed it for 35 years and increased the book collection to 80,000 volumes. This made the collection one of the most important in Germany. However, space was now at a premium and the building had to be expanded through alterations and extensions over the next few years. They were not completed until 1849.

Duchess Anna Amalia Library

On the occasion of the 300th birthday of the Ducal Library, it was renamed the Duchess Anna Amalia Library. In 1998, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Classical Weimar”.

Over the years, the book collection has grown continuously. By 1998, there were 910,000 volumes. In 2001, an underground stacks was built. The first books moved into the stacks in 2004.

"Bücherregale

On 2 September 2004, the unthinkable happened. The library was on fire! A fire broke out in the roof truss of the building, which the fire brigade was fortunately able to contain on the second floor. Nevertheless, 50,000 volumes and 35 paintings were lost. 118,000 volumes were damaged by the fire and extinguishing water. About 28,000 volumes, including the Luther Bible of 1534, were saved.

Many donations helped to rebuild the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in the following years. In autumn 2007, the building could be reopened. The losses of the book collection could not be “replaced” so easily. Since 2008, restorers have been sitting at the nation’s only restoration workshop for fire-damaged written material in Weimar-Legefeld, working on the badly damaged ash books and trying to save, reconstruct and conserve as much of them as possible. A work that will continue until 2028.

Visit to the Duchess Anna Amalia Library

Visiting the famous rococo hall of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library is only possible with a time slot ticket and the visiting time is limited.

We were lucky when we arrived at the historic library building. There were exactly 2 tickets left for the next time slot. The following dates were already fully booked and so some visitors had to rearrange their sightseeing plans a bit. Therefore, our recommendation: book your tickets online well in advance!!!

"Mit

The Rococo Room is on the first floor of the building. But before we were allowed to enter, we had to put on slippers over our street shoes! I like sliding over the parquet floor with these felt slippers.

During the tour, you get an audio guide that not only plays a text, but also gives you visual impressions. I liked it a lot, the texts were quite informative, but not too detailed and long-winded. Just the right “mixture” for my taste.

"Audioguide

The famous hall is located in the middle of the building. Anna Amalia had it furnished in 1766 and it houses part of the collection, about 40,000 books. It is even possible to borrow a book from the reading room of the study centre of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, which is located across the street, by appointment.

"oberer

The hall extends over three floors. During the tour, it is only possible to get an impression in the lower demarcated area. And I was impressed! High shelves with partly beautiful book spines, paintings and busts seem almost like a total work of art. Stairs lead up to the upper gallery and from our vantage point we could see very well the surrounding balcony-like railings of the upper gallery. There, on the surrounding gallery, are more shelves with books.

"Rokokosaal"

While listening to the audio guide, I can hardly detach myself from the sight of the books and the interior design. I particularly like the ceiling painting that was reconstructed after the fire.

"Decke

I would have loved to put a cosy armchair in the room, take a book (even though I certainly can’t read it) and soak up the atmosphere and the smell of the old paper. But unfortunately that’s not possible and the visiting time was also over far too quickly.
