Hackescher Markt in Berlin is home to a little bit of Bavaria. The Heimwerk Berlin restaurant spoils its guests with typical dishes and, of course, Bavarian beer.

HeimWerk only celebrated its opening in October 2023 and the restaurant is still almost an insider tip in Berlin. After restaurants in Munich and Düsseldorf, the first Heimwerk restaurant in Berlin has opened directly at Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station.

When I get there, I am already very excited to see whether and how the Schnitzel & Friends theme is realised there. But before I can take a look at the menu, I peer through the windows into the illuminated dining room. Even from the outside, it looks inviting and cosy, even though the restaurant is not exactly small.

I really like the dining room. Large wall surfaces are clad in wood. I later learn that this is a very special type of wood. This wood, which comes from demolished mountain huts, has been refurbished and now gives the dining room a very special flair. I particularly like the tables, benches and chairs. They are made from solid wood.

They have a wonderfully warm wood tone which, in combination with the walls, reminds me a little of a cosy ski lodge. The little details that you can discover in the room are particularly amusing. The chairs and tables are branded with a dwarf holding a knife and fork, fork prongs form the coat hooks and in the toilets you can listen to the story “A Munich man in heaven”.

What is there to eat?

The theme of the restaurant is “Schnitzel and friends”. This already reveals a little about the food on offer – there are schnitzels. But not just simple schnitzels, the range is really impressive: for example pork schnitzel, veal schnitzel, mountain cheese schnitzel, chill schnitzel, hemp schnitzel, schnitzel burger,… Fans of meat-free cuisine are also catered for, there are vegan and vegetarian schnitzels: for example vegan corn schnitzel, courgette schnitzel, mushroom schnitzel,…
