Arrived in Cádiz by cruise ship? Our tips will make your shore excursion in Cádiz an unforgettable experience. Cádiz is a wonderful place to discover on your own!

The port of Cádiz is within walking distance of the old town. It is a great opportunity to discover the city on your own and experience the Andalusian flair of the port city.

The best way to start your shore excursion in Cádiz is with a bus tour.

“Hop on Hop off” bus tour

The hop-on hop-off bus tour starts right at the port. If you would like to get an initial overview of Cádiz, you should definitely hop on and take a ride. The tickets not only include the bus ride, but also a short guided sightseeing tour on foot.

"Landausflug

Our tip – start your shore excursion in Cádiz with the bus directly at the port and bus stop number 1. The bus runs from there to 14 stops on a circular route. Tickets can be purchased online in advance.

In contrast to many other cities, the large double-decker bus in Cádiz cannot travel directly through the old town. Many streets here are closed to traffic and the streets that are permitted are simply far too narrow. The bus takes a route around the old town and, which we particularly liked, also enters the new town area. Another plus point of this route for us was that it runs along the coast almost all the time. This meant that on one side we always had a fantastic view of the beach, the fortifications and the sea and on the other side we could enjoy a great view of the city.

"Fahrt

During the trip, you can listen to information about Cádiz in 16 different languages using the headphones included in the price. I found this informative and not too lengthy.

The “Hop on Hop off” bus is of course so called because you can hop on and off as often as you like for the duration of your ticket. If you have picked out other destinations in the city using the route plan provided, you should definitely make use of this option. It saves a lot of walking and time, which you want to make good use of on a time-limited shore excursion in Cádiz.

I also really like the option of taking part in the walking tour, which is included in the ticket price. This leads through a small area of the old town past some of the city’s sights. The tour starts daily at 12.30 pm and lasts about an hour.

One advantage, which I only discovered very hidden on the flyer, is the free entry to the Cathedral of Cádiz. There is a meeting point in front of the cathedral from where you can get priority entry at certain times. There is no guided tour, but you save the queuing time at the entrance.

"Bustour

The stops that enticed us to get off:

2 – Short walk to the Plaza de Espana with an impressive monument
4 – Almost directly next to the cathedral and the Teatro romano
5 – at the famous La Caleta beach
9 – Parque Genovés
11 – at Playa Sta. Maria beach

Eating churros on a shore excursion in Cádiz

The famous churros are simply part of a stay in Andalusia! Churros are a type of pastry. The elongated pastries made from choux pastry are fried in hot fat through a star-shaped spout. They are then eaten plain, sprinkled with sugar or dipped in hot chocolate.

"Essen

If you want to eat this – I just love it – wonderful pastry in Cádiz, you should know the following:
They are sold at the stalls in the central market in the morning until 11 am at the latest. They are only available again in the afternoon from around 5pm. Here, the churros are served freshly prepared in a paper bag.

Some cafés also offer the option of eating churros at other times.

We preferred the pastries from the stalls and can really recommend them.

"Churros"

Mercado Central

The central market in Cádiz is not just for buying fresh produce. At lunchtime, you can also enjoy a bite to eat and of course a drink or two at one of the many stalls.

"Landausflug

There is local beer, sherry and also thirst quenchers such as soft drinks and water. There are various stalls where you can sample regional delicacies. Our tip: all kinds of fried seafood, fried curro (very fatty meat) and pintxos (sandwiches) are of course particularly typical.

"Essen

Torre Tavida

The Torre Tavida is one of the city’s top sights. In the high season, you should definitely buy your ticket in advance. Seats are limited, especially if you want to attend the Camera Obsuca demonstration.

"Torre

We visited the tower and wrote about it in detail in our article “Torre Tavira – viewpoint over Cádiz“. We really enjoyed the visit and can highly recommend the short climb up the tower.

Visit to the cathedral of Cádiz

The New Cathedral of Cádiz is definitely the highlight of the city tour on a shore excursion in Cádiz. If you don’t visit the church with the hop-on hop-off bus ticket, you should definitely book the additional option to climb the tower. From the tower you have a wonderful view over the whole city.

"Kathedrale

A visit to the cathedral is a very special experience. The audio guide (included in the price) takes you to the most interesting places in the nave and the crypt. Some of the texts were too long for me and I quickly decided to only listen to a few places that I found very interesting.

"Krypta

In addition to the beautiful choir with its impressive choir stalls, I particularly liked the crypt. I have never seen a crypt that has a domed hall as its central location, from which several other areas branch off in a star shape. I was particularly impressed by the architectural design of the domed hall.

Fancy more information about the cathedral of Cádiz? In our article “View from the tower and an unusual crypt in the cathedral of Cádiz” there is a detailed report of the visit.

"Kathedrale

Shopping in the old town

The old town of Cádiz attracts visitors with its many small streets. Large areas are closed to car traffic, so nothing stands in the way of a leisurely stroll.

Numerous restaurants and cafés invite you to drink a sherry or eat fresh fish. A little tip: just take a side street. The prices here are often cheaper and the quality better. At lunchtime, it’s best to eat where there are lots of locals.

"Altstadtbummel"

The stores in the old town tempt you to go shopping. I’m not one of those holidaymakers who run from store to store and only go home happy with a “haul”. But in Cádiz, I couldn’t resist either. Too many small stores with handicrafts, hidden boutiques with high-quality products and hardly any stores from well-known chains tempted me to go on an extensive shopping spree. Of course, there are also stores selling mass-produced tourist goods. But the further you get away from the cathedral and the large square in front of the town hall, the more interesting the stores become.

Walk on the fortress wall

If you still have some time before the ship sets sail, you should take a walk on the old fortifications. The view of the sea is wonderful.

"Landausflug

Depending on how far you walk, you may also pass some of the city’s sights. You can visit the Botanical Gardens (Parque del Genovés) and the Castillo de Santa Catalina free of charge. If you like, you can walk across the famous Caletta beach, where James Bond stood and watched the Bond Girl walk out of the water.
