Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice are separated by the Odra a few metres apart. So it is not unusual that we stayed at the small and cosy Hotel Villa Casino in Poland and walked the few metres to Frankfurt (Oder).
The border crossing is on the city bridge that connects the two cities on the Odra. We walked from the train station across this bridge to the hotel, but it is also possible to take bus 983 (the only bus that connects the cities across the border). It stops right in front of the hotel. If you arrive by car, there is free parking behind the hotel.
The hotel is a villa building with a brick look. A staircase leads to the entrance area with the hotel reception and the restaurant.
Rooms offered at Hotel Villa Casino
The hotel is quite small with 11 rooms and thus exudes a very personal and cosy charm. The hotel rooms are located on the first floor of the building and are accessible via stairs. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and, of course, a private bathroom (with shower).
Those who wish can choose their room from different categories and associated price ranges. During our stay, we were accommodated in the 26 m² premium double room and were very satisfied.
Room 110 is a corner room with many windows that can be well darkened with curtains for sleeping. The furnishings are in white-grey (silver) tones, with cosy armchairs and a very comfortable large double bed. I was particularly pleased with the very large bathtub, which was the ideal place to relax after a long day.
The morning at the hotel
After the alarm clock woke us from our dreams, we went to breakfast. The hotel has a large restaurant that is also popular with people from Frankfurt. Especially in the evening hours, the outdoor area is very popular.
At first glance, the interior of the restaurant seemed quite “normal”. But when I then looked into a small extra area with only a few tables, I was speechless. Here, a romantic and kitschy dream in white has been created, which surely corresponds to many girls’ dreams. I can very well imagine that this room offers the ideal setting for small wedding celebrations, for example.
In contrast, the largest area of the restaurant is rather plain and very cosy. The breakfast buffet was well filled and varied from savoury to sweet, we didn’t miss anything. The coffee was freshly made and brought to the table and tasted very good. I especially liked the fact that due to the small number of rooms and therefore few people in the hotel, breakfast was quiet and relaxed. That’s how a day can start!
Places of interest on the doorstep
Słubice is a city that lives from border traffic. People come here to fill up with petrol, buy cigarettes or go out to eat. Sightseeing here is almost in vain.
There is a small green area directly in front of the Hotel Villa Casino. Here you will find an interesting sculpture, the Wikipedia Monument. The sculptor Mihran Hakobjan created the approximately 1.70m high sculpture. It shows a globe open at the top, depicted as a puzzle, which is carried by two women and two men. The figures stand on stacks of books. The Wikipedia logo can be seen on the globe.
There is an inscription on the pedestal in several languages. You can also read it in German:
„MIHRAN HAKOBYAN
Wikipedia
“MIHRAN HAKOBYAN
Wikipedia
With this monument, the citizens of Słubice would like to express their respect for thousands of anonymous authors worldwide. Across political, religious and cultural boundaries, their voluntary commitment made Wikipedia, the largest project created by people working together, possible in the first place.
In the year the monument was unveiled, Wikipedia was accessible in over 280 languages and contained a total of 30 million articles. The founders of the monument are convinced that the knowledge society, of which Wikipedia is a pillar, will be able to guarantee the sustainable development of our civilisation, social justice and peace among nations.” – 22.10.2014
An insider tip is the roof terrace of the Collegium Polonicum, which belongs to the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Via winding corridors and stairs (not signposted), you can reach a roof terrace here that offers a view over the Oder to Frankfurt.
