The Hotel Speicher am Ziegelsee is located in a historic, listed grain store directly on the shore of the Ziegelsee in Schwerin.
I was allowed to spend one night here and felt like home from the first moment.
Hotel Speicher is located on the Ziegelsee lake in the west of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Schwerin city area.
The lake is divided into the inner and outer lake. A road forms the separation, but there is a water connection between the two lakes.
After the First World War, a harbor was built on the eastern shore of the Ziegelinnensee. Here they unloaded, for example, detergents, flour and sugar and shipped bricks, feed, lake sand, wood and coal. However, the importance of the inland port remained very low. In 1939, a granary was built on the lake, which was also very much used for many years. After the fall of communism, the port lost its importance and the granary was initially unused.
The conversion to the Hotel Speicher
From 1995 to 1998, a jetty was built at the harbor and the granary was converted into a hotel.
The building, which was actually used as a granary with a capacity of 6000 tons, consists of a massive reinforced concrete structure. Only the outer wall is surrounded by bricks. Since the building is a listed monument, this naturally had to be taken into account during the conversion measures.
It proved particularly difficult to remove the silo cells, which extended from the basement to the seventh floor. Only when all demolition work had been completed after 14 months did the interior work begin.
The room layout had to be adapted to the structural conditions such as windows or steel columns. An individual concept with different room sizes was created and care was also taken to equip everything to match the style of the house.
Climate neutral hotel in Schwerin
The Hotel Speicher has set itself the goal to work as environmentally friendly as possible and to promote environmental protection. Since 2017, the hotel has been the first hotel in northern Germany to be certified with a positive CO2 footprint. This means that more CO2 is bound in supported climate protection projects than is produced in the hotel operation.
Examples of many small and large building blocks that support this effort:
- For example, the hotel offers guests e-bikes and e-cars for rent.
- There is a possibility to use the e-charging station on the premises free of charge.
- In the area of catering, there is increased cooperation with regional suppliers for the breakfast buffet and in the restaurant, or attention is paid to fair trade and certified products.
Hotel Speicher – my stay
When you enter the hotel, you find yourself in a stylishly designed lobby. During my stay in summer, the fireplace was not on, of course, but I can well imagine sitting here with a crackling fire and letting the day end.
I took the elevator to my room and when I opened the door of my single room, my excitement was even greater. What a great view of the brick lake! I opened the window and discovered a listed crane, looked out over the hotel’s boat dock and across the beautiful lake. Yes, and even from the bed you can look over the lake and dream.
In the morning at breakfast, I enter a very appealing breakfast room. A nice place by the window makes the good mood rise immediately. Yes, and then the view of the food on offer – it’s a pity that I couldn’t try everything from this great selection. Fresh juices, fruit, different types of cereals…. I didn’t miss anything and was thrilled with the accurate labeling of the products. It was very rare during my recent hotel stays that I was able to look up exactly what products I was offered. Even though I don’t have to pay attention to specific things, I find this service very important.
For me the stay in this hotel was pure relaxation. I would have liked to stay longer and try the restaurant, fitness area and sauna.
