The Wolfgangsee region, nestled in the breathtaking beauty of the Austrian Alps, is a true dream for travellers and nature enthusiasts. Lake Wolfgang covers an area of around 13 square kilometres and offers an idyllic backdrop of sparkling turquoise waters, majestic mountains and picturesque villages.
One of the most famous towns on Lake Wolfgang is St. Wolfgang, a charming and historic gem. Here you can stroll through the narrow streets, admire traditional buildings. The operetta “Das Weisse Rössl am Wolfgangsee” has made the lake from Austria famous worldwide and attracts international tourist groups every year.
Another popular place is Strobl, an idyllic village on the eastern shore of Lake Wolfgang. Here you can enjoy the peace and serenity of nature, take long walks along the shore or enjoy a relaxing boat trip. Don’t forget to visit the charming weekly market where you can discover local delicacies and handmade souvenirs.

Nature lovers should definitely climb the Schafberg, one of the most striking mountains in the region. You can either take a scenic hike or use the Schafbergbahn, a historic cog railroad that takes you to the summit. From there, you have a breathtaking view of Lake Wolfgangsee and the surrounding mountain landscape.
The Wolfgangsee region in the Salzkammergut is known for its culinary diversity. Some of the restaurants offer a combination of international and regional cuisine, often with a fantastic view of Lake Wolfgangsee. One example of this is the Rosenstberl restaurant in the Hotel Bergrose, which offers down-to-earth dishes. For wine lovers, the Rössl Felsenkeller, which was carved into the rock by miners in the 18th century, offers over 9,000 bottles and more than 500 different wines, including Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Blaufränkisch and more from regions such as the Wachau, Lake Neusiedl and Southern Styria.
Excursion tips at Lake Wolfgang
During our holiday at the Lake Wolfgang we stayed in a small b&b directly on the route of the „Schafbergbahn“. Of course, we had to take the cogwheel railway.
Past a small waterfall, the path led us higher up towards Falkenstein, to a church, the Falkensteinkapelle.
