Summer vacation in Albena

Sandy beach over several kilometers, clean water and sun – this is how Albena presents itself on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. A resort in transition, a resort that thinks about the future.

Albena is located about 30 kilometers from Varna, directly on the coast of the Black Sea. The place, which was named after a character of a Bulgarian writer, is a laid tourism project. Still in the socialist times in Bulgaria, the idea came up to create a place that attracts vacationers every year and offers everything that delights the vacation heart, precisely tailored to their needs.

A wide-angle, low-perspective view of the sandy beach at Albena during a peaceful walk, showing footprints in the foreground and a calm sea meeting a forested coastline under a clear sky.

In 1969 the first nine hotels and four restaurants were completed and vacationers started coming to the Black Sea. Today there are over 40 hotels, numerous restaurants, stores, wellness facilities, a medispa, a small hospital, sports facilities,…. In the season from May to October, vacationers and also spa guests from all over Europe spend an unforgettable time here.

Over the years, the project Resort Albena has become Resort Albena. Here an attempt is made to manage a resort collectively. Fruit, vegetables, wine and wheat for the hotel kitchens are grown on agricultural land, and the self-produced apple juice and honey taste fantastic. They have their own herds of cattle and manage to cover all the beef needs of the hotels. Together, projects such as the recycling of bio-waste from the hotel restaurants for electricity generation are implemented and about 50% of the energy required is now generated by the resort from renewable energy sources.

A sunlit view of the Albena Rosengarten features a paved path winding through lush green lawns and vibrant flower beds toward a modern white hotel building under a blue, cloudy sky. An arched trellis covered in greenery spans the walkway, while clusters of yellow roses in the foreground frame the serene garden landscape.

The resort has imposed environmental requirements, which are gradually being expanded. For example, those responsible check the quality of air and water. So it is possible that the beach has been certified with the Blue Flag for years. Cars are allowed to enter the resort only for loading and unloading and up to central parking areas. Those who need on-site transportation can use the shuttle vehicles. Of course, not every good idea and every started project can be fully implemented immediately and so the whole team is working to make Albena more sustainable and attractive piece by piece.

Where to stay in Albena?

Albena is a hotel city and so of course the first sight of every traveler falls on these offers. Depending on the vacation budget and taste, there is an offer for every vacationer in Albena. There is a parking lot for mobile homes, hotels with 3 stars, hotels with 4 stars and the 5-star hotels.

I walked past some of the hotels, others gave me a glimpse into some of their rooms and I ate in quite a few different hotel restaurants during my time on site.

The exterior of the Maritim Hotel Amelia in Albena, Bulgaria, features a modern white facade with its signature red flame logo and a welcoming stone-paved entrance surrounded by lush green trees.

For example, let’s look at the newest hotel on site. The second Maritim Hotel (Amelia) opened only in 2023. The 5-star hotel has a roof terrace with a pool and a bar. Enjoying the sunset and the view of the Black Sea, swimming and relaxing in the pool during the day – certainly no problem here.

The rooftop terrace of the Albena Maritim hotel features a sleek swimming pool and lounge chairs overlooking a glass railing with views of the beach and sea at dusk.

I was also able to take a look at some of the different room categories. Comfortable, spacious, modern and for the most part with direct sea view.

This image shows a modern and cozy hotel room at the Maritim Hotel in Albena, featuring a large double bed with beige linens and a comfortable seating area with a sofa and coffee table. The room is warmly lit by integrated headboard lighting and a bedside lamp, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

The dinner in the buffet restaurant was very good and varied, every guest should find something to his taste. I was in any case very satisfied.

A multi-tiered buffet display at Albena Maritim features an assortment of gourmet appetizers, including caprese skewers in small glasses, bowls of creamy dips, and various bite-sized savory snacks.

There is a second Maritim Hotel in Albena. I was allowed to stay there during my stay and have written a detailed article about it.

The Flamingo Grand Hotel in Albena, Bulgaria, features a large outdoor swimming pool surrounded by lounge chairs and orange-striped umbrellas with guests relaxing in the sun.

During a visit to the Flamingo Grand Hotel & Spa (5 stars), I was able to visit some rooms, have lunch and test the wellness offer. For example, I particularly liked a room that is laid out over 2 floors as a maisonette. Here there are a total of 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a living room and a kitchenette. Ideally suited for families who want to cook for themselves in between.

A well-appointed hotel room at the Flamingo Grand Hotel in Albena features a large bed with white linens, decorative pillows, and a modern paneled headboard. The room is softly lit by bedside lamps and natural light filtering through sheer curtains.

The hotel’s restaurant offers a varied buffet at lunchtime. On this day, I was particularly happy about the large selection of salads and could not resist the cake.

In the afternoon, I was then able to enjoy a treatment at the Elements spa and wellness center.

A modern relaxation area at Albena Flamingo Wellness features a unique, spherical woven wicker chair with white cushions overlooking a sunlit balcony and distant buildings.

Nestled between the wonderful white sandy beach and the nature reserve Baltata is the hotel Gergana Beach (4 stars). This hotel is especially popular with German vacationers. The Gergana is located at the end of a pedestrian zone. Those arriving or departing here have the option of taking the car-free route with the electric hotel shuttle. I got the chance to visit the former roof terrace one evening after a cool drink at the hotel bar.

A golden sunset glows over the lush green forests and rolling hills of the Albena nature reserve, casting warm orange and yellow light across the cloudy sky.

This is currently closed for hotel guests, but hopefully will be reopened soon. It would be a pity if not more visitors could see this sunset over Bulgaria. Dreamlike, even if slightly cloudy, the sky colored and the evening lowered over Albena.

Finally, I was allowed to take a look in one of the rooms, which looked inviting and cozy and offered a dreamlike view over the Black Sea.

Baltata Nature Reserve

Directly adjacent to the resort of Albena is the Baltata Nature Reserve. In total, more than 50% of the territory of the resort is part of the nature reserve, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria.

A tranquil view of the Albena Nature Reserve featuring a calm river reflecting the surrounding lush green trees and tall reeds under a bright sky.

About 250 different plant species grow in the area. Some of them are threatened with extinction, such as the lianas and the land ash. Of course, the area is also home to countless species of animals and birds. Every year, during the period of bird migration, various birds rest here.

In order not to destroy this beautiful place, there are some created paths that lead to observation points, for example. So you can explore the nature reserve during your vacation.

A muskrat swims through the murky, duckweed-covered water of the Albena nature reserve, its dark fur and long tail visible above the surface.

One evening, I stood on a small viewing platform at a small watercourse. Everywhere the frogs croaked and the mosquitoes were happy about my visit. The view over the water into the dense forest I found very calming and relaxing. The water rippled a bit and a muskrat swam towards me from the opposite side. Big beady eyes peered out of the water and only just before the shore it turned away again and disappeared. Simply great!

What water and beach activities does Albena offer?

Of course, most hotels have pools of various sizes and equipment. Often there are extra children’s pools with small slides or water games. Some hotels offer their guests the possibility to use the large aqua park in town free of charge. Of course, the park is also available to other guests in town, but then for a fee.

An aerial view shows the expansive, multi-sectioned Albena Flamingo pool complex, featuring a wooden footbridge, numerous lounge chairs with orange umbrellas, and lush green trees surrounding the turquoise water.

The beach in Albena is something very special. It is a good 5 km long and in some places up to 500 m wide. I find it particularly beautiful that it falls only very shallowly into the sea. I went one afternoon into the admittedly still quite fresh water (mid-May, just under 18 degrees) of the Black Sea and had to walk quite a bit into it to be able to swim. The water was wonderfully refreshing, very clean and I enjoyed swimming in the sea.

Rows of yellow and white beach umbrellas and white lounge chairs line the sandy Albena Strand under a clear blue sky.

For sun-seekers there are sun loungers on the beach. But beware! The sunbeds are assigned to specific hotels. Signs on the boardwalk indicate to which hotel they belong. The resort has stipulated that 1 umbrella always belongs together with 2 sunbeds. There is a fixed minimum distance between each umbrella that must be maintained when setting up the umbrellas. This ensures that each visitor has enough space. For the beach section of my hotel, there was an additional stipulation that you have to pay extra for a place in the first two rows by the sea. All other sunbeds and umbrellas can be used free of charge.

If you don’t find any sunbeds for your hotel or prefer to lie in the very clean sand, that’s no problem. Wide stretches of beach offer the possibility to do so.

Those who like to be active in sports will find numerous offers on the beach. From beach volleyball to water sports and fun and games on the water, there are many additional ways to organize his visit to the beach.

A close-up view through a volleyball net reveals multiple beach volleyball courts set up on the sandy Albena beach under a clear blue sky.

How can I be active in sports on vacation?

I discovered numerous other possibilities besides the fitness rooms and the sports courses that some hotels offer to their guests, and I certainly didn’t even find everything. There are tennis courts, soccer fields, a swimming pool with a 25 meter lane, basketball courts… Albena is one of the European Resorts of Sport and athletes like to come there to train.

An outdoor Albena fitness equipment set, featuring green and blue metal bars, monkey bars, and a stack of yellow tires, stands on a grassy area near a park bench and a building.

On the beach promenade, for example, there is outdoor fitness equipment and I also discovered a boules court where a French group was playing.

There is the possibility to rent a wide variety of bicycles. We rode one evening with a lot of fun on a 4-wheeler through the village.

Play golf with a professional

If you want, you can play miniature golf or, as I did, take a trial lesson in the golf simulator. In a somewhat hidden basement room of the Flamingo Grand Hotel, Vesselin Savoia, a PGA golf professional who also gives golf courses at the neighboring Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort, was waiting for me.

A slightly curved screen hangs in the room, onto which a golf course is projected with the help of a beamer. About 100 different courses that exist in reality are available for selection and offer even the professional the opportunity to optimally prepare for a tournament.

A woman practicing her golf swing at in Albena, standing on a green mat with several golf balls and clubs nearby.

For me, however, it was first about the topics of club position, swing motion, hitting the ball and, of course, the fun of trying something new. After I had developed the first feeling for the motion sequence, I started. Positioned correctly in front of the screen, ball in view, take swing and hit… the ball banged against the screen and however the computer calculated the airspeed, angle and whatever and let my ball fly on the screen. Depending on the shot sometimes more or less far. My farthest shot was around 100 meters and I was quite happy with that.

The program also offers the possibility to practice putting the ball in. In my trial lesson, I only dealt with the tee shot and had a lot of fun. If you want, you can book a trial lesson at the hotel reception of the Flamingo Grand. I would immediately practice there again and maybe swing the club on a golf course later on.

Fancy a ride?

As the mother of a daughter who loves riding, I have spent countless hours in riding arenas, jumping arenas and horse shows. Theoretically, I have a perfect command of equestrian sports and the statements of the various riding instructors. However, I have only sat on a horse myself 1 or 2 times. But a ride to the beach, I could not say “no”.

A dark brown and white horse stands in a stable stall with green metal bars and a brick wall in the background, ready for a ride with its saddle and saddle pad on.

In Albena there is a small riding stable, which offers riding lessons on the riding arena in addition to rides. For us, 3 very well-groomed horses were already ready saddled in their box. After we had put on the riding helmet, had said to the horse once “hello”, we were allowed to mount.

A women smiles while sitting atop a black and white horse in front of a stable, wearing a purple shirt and a riding helmet.
A person wearing a helmet and purple shirt rides a horse with white legs along the sandy beach in Albena, with the blue sea and sky in the background.

Each horse was accompanied by an employee of the stable and initially also led. Who is a little more confident in riding, can also ride without outside help. Arrived at the beach, my horse was immediately a little more excited. Sometimes the animals are allowed to run through the water, which they seem to like very much. Unfortunately, there were free-roaming dogs on the beach during my ride, which shortened our time there a bit. I would have liked to be a little more on the beach, but I can understand that the safety of horse and man comes first.

Wellness and health in Albena

Albena is also a wellness and spa resort away from the beach and sports. Many hotels offer a wide range of treatments in their wellness areas and there is Medica Albena with its great offer.

The offer in the hotels

The Elements Spa & Wellness Center, located on the 2nd floor of the Hotel Flamingo Grand & Spa, offers an extensive program of various wellness treatments. From classic body massage to oriental massage and of course cosmetic treatments are in the program.

The treatment rooms are modernly furnished. I tried a very special wellness treatment. First, my whole body was treated with a special scrub and then rubbed with a mud-like mass. Then they wrapped me in foil and towels, pressed some buttons on the lounger and I sank into the water-filled mattress.

A person lies covered in white towels inside a specialized treatment tub at the Albena Flamingo spa, situated in a modern room with a wooden shelving unit and a glass shower stall.

Embedded almost floating, I could now relax for about 20 minutes with pleasant background music. At first I just lay still, which of course also meant that the waterbed did not move. I only found it really pleasant when I felt the water in the mattress vibrate slightly and my body gently rocked back and forth. That was pure relaxation for me!

I also visited the Spa & Wellness area at Maritim Paradise Blue during my stay in Albena. The Senses Spa & Wellness offers treatments and massages for face and body. The offer is versatile and ranges from the fitness room and sauna to the salt halotherapy room and the hydromassage room.

First I visited the salt halotherapy room. Here you breathe in air with a strong salt content, which helps, for example, with asthmatic or bronchial problems. So while I was relaxing on the couch, I was doing something for my health by the way. At the end of my stay in Albena I was allowed to enjoy a full body massage. It’s nice to end a trip this relaxed.

Medica Albena

Medica Albena is the largest SPA and wellness center in Bulgaria. In addition, it offers rehabilitation and preventive treatments.

A white building with a stone-tiled facade houses the Albena medical center, surrounded by lush green trees and manicured lawns. A blue flag and the Bulgarian national flag stand near the entrance under a clear blue sky.

During a tour, I was first able to get an impression of the premises and the range of services. Every guest begins their treatment here with an introductory conversation with a doctor. On the basis of this discussion, an individual treatment program is then drawn up. This can contain from the stimulation current treatment to the water gymnastic, from the horse chestnut treatment to the individual herbal tea mixture the most different treatment forms. The scope of treatment is not only adapted to the length of stay in Albena, it can also be arranged in consultation with the cooperating health insurance companies. There is also a possibility to book individual packages.

A special feature of the treatments carried out in Albena is the thermal water used, which springs from springs in the nature reserve. The mineral-rich water is suitable not only for drinking cures, it is also used for baths and helps the body to regenerate. If you want to taste the water during your vacation, you can do it at public fountains in the village. However, as with all thermal waters, one should enjoy in moderation.

A close-up shot of a mineral water fountain in Albena, Bulgaria, shows a steady stream of water shooting upwards from a weathered brass nozzle into a large, speckled stone basin. The fountain is surrounded by a lush green lawn, and the base of the fixture shows orange-tinted mineral deposits from the Albena mineral water.

I found the mud treatment very exciting. The healing mud used here has a proven anti-inflammatory effect and stimulates the metabolic processes in the body. What I particularly like, the mud comes from the region. It is taken directly from the Black Sea and also brought back there. It then accumulates minerals again for 7 years before it is used again.

A person's legs rest on a medical table, with one leg wrapped in compression bandage and the other bare, showing swelling.

In order to get to know the offer a bit, I treated my legs with cooling horse chestnut wraps. For about 20 minutes I lay in a treatment cabin and my legs were wrapped in wet towels. It was pleasant and promoted circulation in my lower legs. A day later, I joined a group of 6 people in a 20-minute water gymnastics session. It was not a water gymnastics, which is done like for example in fitness studios with loud music and a lot of power. This exercise session was exactly adapted to the physical conditions of the group and mobilized the joint and muscle groups throughout the body. The participants were very satisfied at the end of the unit.

The swimming pool features a large indoor pool with clear blue water reflecting the tall arched windows, colorful flags, and a vibrant mural on the side wall.

And can you enjoy your summer vacation in Albena?

I think Albena is a great vacation destination for many different people. Whether beach vacation, family vacation, sport on vacation, recovery with wellness, cure – and rehabilitation stay – the offer speaks for itself. I will definitely go to Albena again and enjoy some time off there.

If you feel like a trip to the region, you will find some nice destinations:

  • Baltschik
