Porto can also do beer and not just port!

Porto is known for its wine. But is there also good beer there? We went in search of craft beer in Porto and discovered some great breweries.

We have already discovered in other cities that our idea of craft beer does not necessarily match those on the spot. So we were all the more curious to see what would await us in the breweries or pubs in Porto.

Two beers in advance

Before we went to the first brewery, we first tried “bottled beer”.

Bohemia Bock

The beer comes from the house of Sagres, one of the leading Portuguese beer producers, which now belongs to a large Dutch group.

Bohemia Bock is a dark bock-style beer with a long fermentation. The alcohol content is 6.5%.

The beer did not meet my taste, it was a bit too “uniform”, not unusual enough. I think you could tell that the beer comes from a large brewery.

West Coast IPA

The West Coast IPA from Alentjo (Portugal) has a wonderful golden hue. A light citrus smell wafts into the nose. Taste-wise, I found the beer to be tart, but not too tart. It tasted very good to me.

The place for a craft beer in Porto: A Fábrica da Picaria – Cervejaria Artesanal

This brewery is located in a street where numerous restaurants and bars open their doors towards evening. The entrance is quite inconspicuous and we almost walked past it.

When you enter the pub, you stand in a rather narrow tube-like room. A handwritten menu hangs on the counter, showing the current beer selection. There are a maximum of 4 different beers on tap. The selection changes every week. If a beer tastes good, you have to hope that it will still be on offer the next time you visit.

The beer is ordered at the counter, then freshly tapped and you can take it straight to your seat. There are relatively few indoor seats, but there is a small beer garden in the courtyard. If you want to be sure of getting a seat, for example to eat something here, you should definitely reserve a table.

We were thrilled with the beer selection! You can get really good-tasting craft beer here in Porto. The beer is brewed in kettles in the dining room and the smell of the mash drifted through the room.

The Loira Pils was certainly the most “unspectacular” beer on offer. It was just a typical pilsner, but it tasted good.

We liked the Amber Ale and the Tropical IPA better. Both craft beers in Porto had a round, full-bodied taste, were very drinkable and simply tasted like more!

Then, on a second visit, there was a Kellerbier for me. Not too hoppy, not too malty – the taste components were just right for each other.

Alvares Brewery Co. Taproom Porto

The Taproom Alvares was still quite empty when we arrived. The room quickly filled up and the atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant.

Bierauswahl im Alvares

Various beers on tap are offered here, not all of which come from Portugal. Price-wise, the beer prices for craft beer were okay (so if you relate that to pricing in Berlin), but I found them quite high by Portuguese standards.

Craft Beer in Porto

We chose the fruity Oitava Colina and the rather tart tasting MUSA Red Zeppelin. The Oitava Colina is brewed in the Lisbon area, an IPA with a slightly tart yet fruity taste. The beer from the MUSA brewery was quite tart and had a beautiful colour.

Rua do Almada 383,
4000-303 Porto, Portugal

Musa das Virtudes

We were in Porto during the World Cup, which sometimes had an adverse effect on visits to restaurants and pubs. Often the seats were reserved, but if you were there at somewhat unusual times, there was usually no problem getting a seat. This was also the case at Musa das Virtudes.

Craft Beer in Porto, Musa Brewery

Only beer from the MUSA brewery is served here and, of course, you also get something to eat.

The beers on offer at the moment are listed on a menu at the counter. Our first choice was two APA beers, which we liked very much. We tried a few more beers from the brewery and they convinced us every time.

Mercado Bom Sucesso

The Mercado Bom Sucesso is one of the best-known markets in the city. However, no fruit, vegetables or junk is sold here. In the large hall there are only stalls offering food and drinks.

Of course, a stand offering beer is not to be missed. We treated ourselves to a beer break at the counter on one of the bar stools.

The offer was very diverse: from German wheat beer from well-known breweries to American beer, everything was represented during our visit. In total, there must have been 50 differently designed taps from the various suppliers. We chose two beers from “The Browers”. The beer is brewed near Lisbon.

Craft Beer in Porto

I opted for “The Browers Kellerbier”. A light golden beer with 5% alcohol content. It was pleasantly strong and very drinkable. Patrick chose “The Browers Ale”. He got a very dark and slightly sweet beer. It was a bit too sweet for me, but he liked it very much.
