Schwerin a city trip

Located in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schwerin is one of the most picturesque cities in northern Germany. Visitors to Schwerin can experience a unique blend of cultural diversity, historical architecture and breathtaking natural landscapes on a city break.

With its narrow alleyways, historic buildings and charming squares, Schwerin’s old town is a wonderful place for a relaxing stroll. Visitors can linger in cosy cafés, browse in boutiques and experience the atmosphere of a city that preserves its history while radiating a modern vibrancy.

For more than 1000 years, the city was the stately and political centre of Mecklenburg. The beautiful castle, the former residence, is now the seat of the state parliament. Visitors can stroll through the castle park and visit the castle. In summer, there is the opportunity to see performances by the Mecklenburg State Theatre in the castle courtyard.

Schwerin

Schwerin is not only architecturally and historically significant, but also a centre for art and culture. The Mecklenburg State Theatre offers a wide range of performances, from operas to ballets. Numerous galleries and museums, such as the Schwerin State Museum, present fascinating works of art and historical exhibits that reflect the cultural diversity of the region.

The city is located in the centre of the Schwerin Lake District. The city is surrounded by picturesque lakes and forests that offer an oasis of peace and relaxation. Whether on a boat trip on Lake Schwerin, a hike in the surrounding countryside or simply a relaxing day in the castle gardens – Schwerin is a paradise for nature lovers.

Getting There

Arrival

By plane
The regional airport of Rostock-Laage is located about 80 kilometers from the state capital. The nearest airport with international connections is in Hamburg. It is easily accessible by train.

By train
Schwerin’s main train station is served by regional and long-distance trains. Trains from Hamburg, Rostock and Berlin stop there. In addition, there are connections with regional trains to the surrounding region.
The city visitor walks only about 10 minutes from the main station to the historic old town.

Schwerin-Mitte station is served by regional trains and the ODEG.

By bus
The ZOB of the state capital is located at Grunthalplatz in front of the main station. There are regular long-distance buses to the city.

By car
The state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can be reached via the A 24 and A 14 federal highways. From there, federal highways lead into the city.

By ship
Lake Schwerin can be reached by boat via the Müritz-Elde-Stör waterway and is connected to the Elbe River. Excursion boats sail on the lake.

Public transport
From the ZOB in front of the main station, streetcar and bus lines run to the city and surrounding areas.

On foot
The historic old town can be explored very well on foot.

In the area of the city center there are several parking garages for which a fee is charged. In addition, there are P&R parking spaces. Within a radius of about 650 meters around the marketplace are a good 2000 paid parking spaces.

Best time to travel

Best time to visit Schwerin

Spring (March – May):
Spring in Schwerin starts with cooler temperatures, averaging 4°C in March, and gradually rises. In April, the temperature reaches around 9°C, and in May it becomes pleasantly warm with an average of 14°C. Rainfall is moderate during these months, with 50 mm in March, 42 mm in April and 55 mm in May.

Summer (June – August):
Summer is the warmest time of the year in Schwerin. Temperatures average 17°C in June and reach highs of 19°C in July and August. However, these months are also the wettest, with 70 mm of rainfall in June and 78 mm in both July and August. Despite the rain, summer is a popular time for tourists to enjoy the city and the surrounding lakes.

Autumn (September – November):
The weather gradually cools down in autumn. September still starts warm with an average of 15°C, but in October temperatures drop to 10°C and further to 5°C in November. Rainfall in autumn is similar to spring, with 55 mm in September, 51 mm in October and 69 mm in November.

Winter (December – February):
Winter in Schwerin is cold, with average temperatures of 2°C in December, 1°C in February and around freezing in January. Precipitation is relatively high in winter, especially in December and January with 69 mm each and slightly less in February with 40 mm.

The Christmas market in Schwerin, known as “The Star in the North”, is a unique pre-Christmas experience in Schwerin’s picturesque old town. The market always opens at the end of November with a colorful parade on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich. This is followed by the official opening on the market square.
