Eating in Schwerin – that can be good, cheap, expensive, vegetarian, sweet, savory…. There is a wide selection of good restaurants and my 4 days on site were just enough to compile 8 tips. Taste-wise, they all convinced me and I’m looking forward to discovering more when I visit the city again.
Restaurant LUKAS
The LUKAS restaurant advertises that it is the only fish restaurant in Schwerin. Accordingly, I was curious about the selection of fish dishes on the menu. On the menu I then discovered, for example, gilthead sea bream, Arctic trout, plaice, Baltic cod and a mixed fish platter.
All very tasty fish and the fish from the Baltic Sea also quite regional, but unfortunately I was missing something more regional on the plate. Perch, pike, catfish and tench can be found in the surrounding lakes and these fish also taste great.
I ate the filet of gilthead. This was accompanied by squid tagliatelle and marinated cherry tomatoes. A fantastically tasty dish! Especially the caviar velouté rounded off the taste. Without question, the dish was worth its price.
However, not only fish dishes are offered, but also a selection of vegetarian dishes and meat dishes can be found on the menu.
I was particularly pleased with the regional beer on the menu.
Here you get two beers from the Hennings craft brewery – a naturally cloudy pilsner and a red beer.
For me, it’s quite clear that a meal in Schwerin also includes a beer from the region. I ordered the pilsner and tasted the red beer. The red beer is a very light little tart beer that was brewed from three roasted malts. Some would say a typical women’s beer as there is little bitterness to taste, I find it a great light summer beer with a good color. The pilsner is naturally cloudy, light beer that is touted with a nice hop bitterness. I really enjoyed the beer, it was quite smooth for my taste and the hops were noticeable but not dominant. A round but not intrusive taste that goes well with food

Müllers Café – Bistro – Kneipe
Müller’s Café is located not far from the cathedral and the city’s market square. The café has a modern furnished guest room and a beautifully landscaped outdoor area.
The food is made from products of the region, which come from organic farming. The food here is vegetarian.
I ate a vegetarian burger and deliberately avoided side dishes. The burger was very large for my eating habits at lunchtime and more than filling. Nevertheless, I ate it completely – it was just too good!

Restaurant & Café Herzogliche Dampfwäscherei
A dinner took me to the Herzogliche Dampfwäscherei. In 1895, this house was used as the Grand Ducal Washhouse, from 1918 a commercially operated steam laundry was located here and finally the Vereinsbrauerei Mecklenburgischer Wirte A. G. zu Lübz moved in here. Today, the red and yellow clinker-clad half-timbered house is a restaurant. It is located near Schwerin Castle and, especially in summer, attracts visitors with a large outdoor area where you can sit.
I ate the tarte flambée there with fresh chanterelles, onions, tomatoes, pine nuts, Serrano ham, marinated arugula and shaved parmesan. The portion size was very good. The tarte flambée also tasted really good. The dough was crispy, not too thick. The topping on the tarte flambée was well seasoned. I found the price of the dish a bit high for a tarte flambée, but the restaurant is not one of the cheapest restaurants in town either.
I found the service friendly, but slightly stressed. However, since there were several larger groups sitting in the restaurant who all wanted to be served at the same time, I can certainly understand that.
If you want a little more high-priced dining in Schwerin, the Herzogliche Dampfwäscherei is a good place to go.

Weinhaus Wöhler
Around 1750, the first “Wöhlerhaus” was built, a two-story half-timbered house in the Schelfstadt. In 1819, the wine wholesaler Wöhler was founded and in 1895, the historic guest rooms and wine taverns were put into operation.
In 1983 the wine taverns had to be closed. The old building was in acute danger of collapsing, and only after extensive restoration work was it possible to resume operations in 2001.
So a traditional house awaited us, which attracts with fresh and seasonal food in Schwerin.
Before we took a seat in the quiet garden area of the house, we could take a look into the guest room. Here you can sit in small cozy separated areas. If you look closer, you discover old wall designs that give the guest room a certain charm.
I ate a schnitzel “Viennese style” with potato and cucumber salad at Weinhaus Wöhler. Unfortunately, they did not respond to my request to get only a small portion. The meat would be portioned and that could not be changed. Flexible simply a piece of meat from a children’s plate to use was apparently not possible. Very unfortunate, because so in the end a part of the food went into the trash, because I could not eat the portion size.
It tasted – especially the potato-cucumber salad was fresh, summery and well tasted.

Café Prag
Eating cake in Schwerin – we were at Café Prag in the old town. In 1791 the Kreff family bought the house and opened a coffee house here. It remained in the family for 5 generations and became one of the most famous business houses in Schwerin. In 1936 in the course of inheritance disputes, the business was sold to the Mecklenburg government. In GDR times, the café, then called HO-Betriebsgaststätte Einheit, was the only place to get Czech beer in Schwerin. In 1985, after a few years of reconstruction, a traditional coffee house was reopened here.
The kitchen buffet is very praised everywhere and so we decided to try the checkerboard cake here. The fruit and buttercream cake was powerful, I would have liked it a bit more fruity, the cream filling was very dominant. Unfortunately, I found the dough a bit dry.
We have used the opportunity in beautiful weather sitting in the pedestrian zone to watch the hustle and bustle. A look in the café should dare but, I liked it here well and I can imagine in bad weather and a hot chocolate to sit here comfortably.

ILKA EIS & HEISS
Soft ice cream is also part of the meal in Schwerin. I had read some in advance and came across ILKA EIS.
Here there is soft ice cream of a different kind. Every day you can look forward to the variety chocolate vanilla and a second creation that changes daily.
Too bad that I managed to eat soft ice cream there only three times in my almost 4 days. Sure I tried the chocolate vanilla composition and then the respective daily offer: black currant with licorice (day 1) and blueberry lemon curd (day 2).
Good that I do not live in Schwerin, I would be a regular customer! The ice cream from fresh ingredients tastes very intense. You can taste the individual components well out. The combination with licorice may take some getting used to, but it tasted very good in combination with the blackcurrant. The blueberry lemon curd Varinante tasted creamy, fruity, light – ideal for summer, very refreshing.
I was surprised by the price and the portion sizes. My first ice cream I bought as a large portion for 2,-€. It was really big! A very good price-performance ratio. The other two ice creations I have then purchased in “small” for 1,50€.
It is already clear to me. If I am in Schwerin again, I will definitely eat ice cream here again.

Rösterei Fuchs
The smell of coffee was clearly noticeable as I approached the coffee roastery. And right, the machine was working and freshly roasted coffee beans spread a wonderful smell.
Not only good food in Schwerin is possible, also good coffee is available here. The beans come from all good coffee regions of the world and are sold freshly roasted in the store and of course also offered for drinking.

Gartencafé Wiligrad – just outside Schwerin
The trip went by bike from Schwerin to Wiligrad. There, before exploring, a small snack in the garden café was on the agenda.
Under a large umbrella, a table was ready for us and we could take a seat right away. After a Mediterranean snack, cake was still on my wish list. I had previously examined the very good-looking kitchen buffet and the decision was really hard.
Fortunately, it was not only me so and so we simply shared several pieces of cake. The strawberry cake and the gooseberry meringue cake were definitely among my favorites.
