In EdelSteinLand, in the small village of Langweiler, you will find the Klosterhotel Marienhöh. The lifestyle and family hotel is just the right place for a time-out for two.
At the beginning of the last century, two well-heeled ladies had a children’s home built in Langweiler. This was later bought by the city of Oberhausen. After the Second World War, the facility was briefly used as a nursing home for the elderly, who were cared for by the Order of the Borromean Sisters of Trier. From 1951, a children’s recreation home was located in Langweiler until the Catholic Women’s Order of the Sisters of Mary bought the property and developed it further as a convent.
In 2002, the nuns gave up the convent and on 7 June 2004, the last service was celebrated in the chapel. The convent now stood abandoned until a real estate company bought the property at the end of 2004 and converted it into a beautiful hotel complex. In 2009, the Klosterhotel Marienhöh opened its doors to guests. Not far from the main building, the hotel also offers the possibility to stay in small chalets. These vary in size and are ideal for families or couples who like a little more space.
Even today, one can discover traces of the former past in the entire hotel complex. Today, the former chapel of the monastery houses a branch of the registry office.
I particularly liked the former cloister. The brickwork still gives the impression of an ecclesiastical building and the enclosed courtyard invites you to linger.
Romantic time out for two
The 4-star hotel is the perfect place for a romantic getaway for two. The cosy double rooms in the main building and the annexe are decorated in shades of colour that radiate peace and warmth. You feel at home as soon as you step through the room door.
The rooms all have a bathroom with a shower. Selected care products are offered, which smell wonderful. In a basket you will find bathrobes and slippers as well as a cosy bath towel that is ideal for a visit to the SPA.
I was especially happy about the 2 cosy down duvets on the bed and about a mattress that exactly met our needs. We haven’t slept so well in a long time!
Our room had a small balcony where you can sit well in warm weather.
Pleasure begins with breakfast
The restaurant “1854” offers an excellent breakfast buffet every morning. Here, too, the charm of the former monastery can be seen well in the partly unplastered stone arches.
The breakfast buffet is very varied and offered us everything we like to eat in the morning. I was particularly pleased with the large selection of teas and the possibility to order small “special requests”, such as freshly prepared omelettes from the kitchen.
In the summer, you can sit in the monastery garden or on the lakeside terrace, and in the winter, a fireplace in the restaurant beckoned, where you can also have dinner.
The evening ended for us in the bar. Here, too, I immediately felt at home – the atmosphere and the drinks were good. You could sit comfortably and review the past day. The ideal end to a day.
Wellness at Marienhöh Monastery – lifestyle & family hotel
What could be nicer than enjoying some time together in the spa area during a romantic getaway for two? The Hotel Marienhöh offers its guests free use of the SPA area with pool, sauna and fitness room.
The pool is quite large at 6 x 15 metres and the water was wonderfully warm when I visited. You can swim here daily from 7am – 10pm (children are only allowed to use it at certain times) or relax on the loungers at the edge of the pool. The sauna area opens from 10am – 10pm, and there are special times for children here too. The bio-sauna, steam bath and Finnish sauna are wonderful places to relax. There is a fireplace in the relaxation area, which creates a romantic atmosphere, especially in the dark evening hours.
Would you like a massage? At Kloster Marienhöh – lifestyle & family hotel you can book massages and cosmetic treatments. For a romantic getaway for two, it is also possible to book the Marienhöh Spa Suite for two. Here you can expect a steam bath, a whirlpool, a massage and, of course, time for two by candlelight with sparkling wine and canapés.
I was allowed to enjoy a relaxing and soothing individual massage. The well-tempered oil on my back and stomach on the heated massage table made the experience perfect. It’s a pity that the time was over so quickly.
Fancy some sport?
In the SPA area there is a room with some fitness equipment.
Those who like to travel by bike and have not brought their bike with them can rent bicycles at the reception.
The hotel offers its guests an outdoor tennis court, which should be reserved in good time during the summer months.
Throughout the year, it is possible to book a bowling alley, which is located in the house.
Friends of golf will find a golf course about 3 kilometres away.
Relaxation while hiking directly from the hotel
The village of Langweiler lies in the middle of the Hunsrück forest landscape. Of course, it’s a good idea to start a hike right in front of the hotel. If you haven’t brought suitable hiking boots with you, you can rent them at the hotel. The hotel also offers guided tours in the surrounding area, the dates of which can be requested at the reception.
We went in search of the starting point of the hiking routes and discovered them directly at the hotel car park. Two routes are signposted:
Charcoal burners’ path at the Steinbach
Langweiler used to be a settlement where people lived from the production of charcoal. The hiking route leads along natural paths through the forest and across meadows. We walked part of the route and enjoyed being on the soft forest floor. Along the route you will find information boards about the life and work of the charcoal burners.
The 14-kilometre route is easy to follow on the map:
It takes a good 4 hours to complete the circular route, which reveals the beauty of the Hunsrück.
Hiking trail “Between the woods”
The hiking trail “Zwischen den Wäldern” is not quite at the monastery hotel. Here, however, an access path (about 2.5 kilometres long) leads to the circular route. The name of the hike was not chosen by chance. The winding path runs through dense forests and offers occasional views over wide open fields. The circuit is about 10.7 kilometres long and can be followed very well on the map.
