Travelling in Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt is a multifaceted travel destination that combines nature, history, culture and enjoyment in a unique way. For anyone who enjoys hiking, cultural sights, good food and wine, Saxony-Anhalt is an absolute insider tip.

Saxony-Anhalt is a federal state where you can stumble across German history at almost every turn. It is home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Bauhaus Dessau, the Luther memorials in Wittenberg and Eisleben, as well as the medieval old town of Quedlinburg with its over 2,000 half-timbered houses. Saxony-Anhalt is a particularly exciting destination for history and culture lovers. It is a center of the Reformation: Martin Luther lived and worked here, making Wittenberg one of the most important places in world history. Saxony-Anhalt offers an incredible variety of cultural highlights for museum and history fans.

saxony-anhalt

The region is a paradise for architecture and art lovers. In addition to the Bauhaus in Dessau, the state is home to impressive castles and palaces, including Querfurt Castle and Falkenstein Castle in the Harz Mountains.

Saxony-Anhalt is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. The Harz, the northernmost low mountain range in Germany, offers a variety of hiking trails, including the Hexenstieg, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany, where you can also explore the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz. The Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park, criss-crossed by rivers and vineyards, is also a highlight for outdoor enthusiasts. Cycling, hiking and boat trips are popular activities here.

Saxony-Anhalt is an insider tip for connoisseurs. The Saale-Unstrut region is Germany’s northernmost quality wine-growing area. The gentle vineyards along the Saale and Unstrut rivers produce award-winning wines that can be tasted in the region’s wineries and wine shops. But beer culture also has its place here. There are traditional breweries in Magdeburg and the surrounding area that keep Saxony-Anhalt’s art of brewing alive. You can sample regional beer specialties in small pubs and breweries. The regional cuisine entices with hearty dishes such as Harz cheese, brine eggs or game dishes from the Harz region. If you like it sweet, you should try the Halloren-Kugeln from Halle – the oldest chocolate specialty in Germany!
