Travel information for Greece

Getting There

Arrival

By plane
The main airports on the mainland are in Athens and Thessaloniki. In addition, there are other airports on the large Greek islands that are served by international airlines.

By train
International train connections to Greece are almost non-existent. Most connections were discontinued as a result of the financial crisis in 2011. The few remaining connections include the routes to Belgrade and Sofia to Thessaloniki.

By bus
There are long-distance bus connections that go to surrounding countries.

By car
Road connections exist to Albania, northern Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Mostly, however, the ferry connections from Italy to Greece are used.
The motorways are subject to tolls. The toll must be paid at stations set up in the middle of the motorway.

By boat
Car ferries from Tiest, Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi go to Greece all year round.
Corfu is served from Ancona, Bari and Brindisi.

There are regular ferry connections between some Greek islands and the Turkish mainland, but these are thinned out outside the tourist season.

Entry requirements / Visa

EU citizens

Entry to Greece is possible for German citizens and EU citizens with the following documents:

  • Passport,
  • identity card

Documents other than the temporary identity card must not have been out of date for more than one year. A separate identity document is also required for children.

The requirements of individual airlines regarding the documents to be carried by their passengers sometimes deviate from the government regulations. For example, air travel to Germany can only be commenced with a valid passport/identity card or a substitute passport document issued by the German consular representations in Greece.

Entry requirements for Greece for non-EU citizens

Special entry requirements apply to non-EU citizens, which should be taken into account before traveling.

Visa requirement: Non-EU citizens from countries subject to a visa requirement must apply for a Schengen visa in order to enter Greece. This visa allows you to stay in Greece and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The application must be made in person at the embassy or one of the Greek consulates.

Valid travel documents: Upon entry, non-EU citizens must present a valid passport, which must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of departure. It is important that the passport is not older than ten years.

Further requirements: Depending on the current political and health situation, additional entry requirements may apply, such as proof of health or special visas for longer stays. It is recommended that you check the latest requirements with the relevant Greek authorities or consulates before traveling.

Schengen visa: Travelers can also enter Greece with a valid Schengen visa or residence permit from a Schengen country. However, it should be noted that visas or residence permits issued by Cyprus are not valid for entry into other Schengen countries.

By car
In Greece, traffic is on the right. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 ‰.
The following speed regulations apply:

CARS:
In urban areas = 50 km/h
Country road = 90 km/h
Highway = 130 km/h

In remote areas, it is advisable to have some knowledge of the Greek alphabet, as there are not always signs in Latin letters.

By plane
For fast connections between the mainland and the islands, air travel is an excellent choice. Greece has an extensive network of air routes connecting the major cities with the popular islands.

By bus
Buses are one of the cheapest and most extensive transportation options in Greece. The national bus network, operated by KTEL, is well developed and connects almost all towns and larger villages. Buses are a reliable option for longer distances and offer a good alternative if there is no rail connection available.

By train
Rail is another option for traveling on the mainland. Although the network is not as extensive as in other European countries, it still offers a comfortable and scenic travel alternative between the larger cities and some tourist regions.

By ferry
Due to the geographical nature of Greece with its many islands, ferries play a central role in transportation. They are often the only way to reach some of the more remote islands. The ferry network is well developed and the crossings offer spectacular views of the Aegean and Ionian Seas.

The tip in Greek tavernas is about 5% of the bill. The money remains on the table after payment. If you pay by credit card, the tip is left in cash on the table so that it reaches the service staff.

If you travel by taxi, a 10% tip is a reasonable guideline.

Hotel staff do not earn a lot of money, so the guests’ tips are taken into account. About one euro per day is considered reasonable.

The national language is Greek. English and German are widely spoken, especially in tourist areas.
