The name of the city dates back to the time when the Arabs occupied large parts of the region. At that time, the Andalusian city was located right on the border with European Spain and was thus given the suffix “on the border” – “de la frontera”.

This means that the fresh Atlantic breezes keep the climate pleasantly mild. From here, travelers can also easily explore other picturesque towns and villages in the Cádiz region. The convenient location between the historic cities of Seville and Cadiz makes Jerez an ideal base for adventures in the surrounding area.

Flamenco and Andalusia simply belong together. Jerez is one of the strongholds of flamenco and hosts a large festival every year that attracts many visitors. We wanted to find out more about the tradition of flamenco in Jerez.
My visit to Jerez de la Frontera introduced me to the world of sherry. The visit to Bodegas Fundador, one of the oldest and most famous sherry cellars in the region, was a great and unique tasting experience for us.
If you stroll through the often narrow streets of the old town of Jerez, you will discover many old buildings. Behind one façade or another lies a real treasure that you wouldn't expect to find there - like behind the walls of the Palacio del Virrey Laserna.

Alcázar de Jerez de la Frontera - the fortress in the middle of the city
High, strong fortress walls surround the grounds of the Alcázar in Jerez de la Frontera. They are beautifully illuminated in the evening and we really wanted to take a look behind these walls.
Tio Pepe, a renowned sherry producer, offers a wide range of sherry varieties that represent different flavor profiles and production styles. In Jerez, you have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour followed by a tasting at Bodegas Tio Pepe.
A large, imposing driveway with a few thresholds leads to the cathedral of Jerez and the bell tower next to it. A truly impressive building from the 17th century, it is one of the most important sights in Jerez de la Frontera.

Tick tock clink and clang sounded all around us as we entered one of the most unusual museums in Jerez. We are in the Palacio del Tiempo, a clock museum in the Museos de la Atalaya museum complex.
Horses and carriages at the Royal Andalusian Riding School of Jerez
A faint smell of horses fills our noses as we walk past the outer wall of the Royal Andalusian Riding School in Jerez. As soon as we step through the entrance gate, we find ourselves in another world.
By plane
The city has an airport. It is almost exclusively served by low-cost airlines. However, the focus is on connections within Spain. Direct flights from Germany are only offered from a few cities. The city can be reached from the airport by the C1 local train, which runs quite infrequently. The M-050 bus runs from the airport to the main train station and on to Cádiz.
Larger airports with international providers can be found in Seville and Málaga.
By train
Jerez is on the Cádiz – Seville railroad line. There are also connections to Madrid.
The train station is not far from the city center. You can walk the route, but the cabs on the right before the exit are quick and reasonably priced.
By bus
The city has a central bus station right next to the train station. There is a transport network in the region that connects the towns in the surrounding area. In addition, some companies also offer trips to centers such as Madrid, Tarifa, Algecira and Seville.
The bus station is open from 6.15 a.m. to midnight and also offers luggage storage.
By car
From Cádiz you can reach the city via the A4 and AP$/E5. From Seville you can reach Jerez via the AP4/E5. There is also a

The inner city area, where the city’s main tourist attractions are located, is not particularly large. We were able to explore the city on foot.

In general, spring and fall are particularly pleasant. During these periods you can enjoy mild weather and the opportunity to experience Jerez in peace and quiet.
Spring (March to May):
Spring is a wonderful time to visit Jerez. Temperatures are mild, averaging between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Fall (September to November):
In the fall, the weather cools down from the hot summer months, and temperatures range comfortably between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Summer and winter
Less recommendable are the hot summer months (June to August), when temperatures can often rise above 30 degrees Celsius and the city is very busy. Winter (December to February) is cooler and quieter, but some facilities may be closed and the days are shorter.
