For one week we were allowed to spend our summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District and visit the vacation park Mirow. The theme “Summering” was on our program and should give us unforgettable experiences.
Before we got in the car to start our summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District, I did a little research on the website about the park and the cottages and planned our travel arrangements accordingly.

and take with me… We have compiled our list of essentials for a successful stay. Our cottage contained the basic equipment, but so some things we needed and were glad to have packed:

Summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District in the Ferienpark Mirow
It’s not that far from Berlin to Ferienpark Mirow and since you can only check in from 3pm (but beware during our stay the reception closed at 6pm, so don’t be late), we were able to start the day comfortably.
Arriving in Granzow, about 2.5 kilometers from Mirow, we received a quick briefing on the park and then were able to drive directly to our vacation home by car.
Enthusiastically I stand in front of the house type tern – in such a vacation home I always wanted to live. For me, the Scandinavian house type is the epitome of coziness and so I hoped that the red house could become the perfect home for us at this time.
I unlock the door, enter the 77 square meters of the house and immediately feel like I’ve arrived. Right next to the front door is the “children’s room” with two single beds. We won’t need this room, the door stays closed! The living room is fantastically large. A cozy sitting area with fireplace and TV and a large dining table offer plenty of space. I step out through the patio door and stand on a sun terrace that invites you to relax. Here I only lack the hammock or the beach chair and the vacation feeling would be perfect.
A look into the small but more than adequate bedroom – relief spreads, there is a mosquito screen in front of the window! Then I go into the kitchen. Here is a fully equipped kitchenette with stove, oven, coffee maker, kettle, refrigerator and a dishwasher. For us, everything we need is there – a dishwasher is nice, but I also wash dishes by hand at home and I wouldn’t have minded doing without it. Finally, a look at the bathroom. The shower is at ground level, and there is a whirlpool and sauna in the house. I tested the whirlpool – a little noisy, but I love being able to relax in such a large tub. The sauna I really wanted to test. But I admit that at a temperature of 25-30 degrees I felt more like ice than sweating in the sauna. Must I probably come back again in the fall and then use the sauna.
Last check the WLAN in the house. It worked perfectly in our house and was also so fast that we could work without any problems. Now our summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District could begin!
Summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District – what to experience
From our vacation home we have made many very different excursions. In the process, we got to know and love the diversity of the region. A week sounds like a lot of time, but it wasn’t even close to getting to know the region properly. In any case, we found the car is great and also often indispensable to reach some destinations. But the bike, the paddle boat and the steamer simply offer Quality time, which should be taken to really enjoy the summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District. For us a wonderful time out, which we unfortunately often neglect.
Explore the area by bike
On the very first day, we were able to pick up bikes from the Granzow bike station. Until the next day we were allowed to use them free of charge and explore the area.
Of course, we took advantage of this and with a short trip in the direction of Mirow we started our bike season. Mirow and the castle island are only about 2.5 kilometers from the vacation park and what we have experienced there can be read in our article “On the road in the Mecklenburg Lake District”.
In the afternoon we got on our bikes again and rode along the bike path to the Müritz National Park. The bike path is wide and well developed (is also ideal for a jogging round, because here is always shade despite the sun). At first it is a bit monotonous, because on the right and left is forest and unfortunately you can not catch a glimpse of the water. Later, the paved bike path ends and you continue on the forest floor. One should not leave the paved and signposted paths. Everywhere there are signs warning about the pollution of the ground with ammunition residues.
We were out in nature for about 2 hours and enjoyed our little bike ride.
With the paddle boat to the water lily paradise
The Granzow Canoe Station rents out kayaks and canoes right on the shore of Lake Granzow. We were allowed to pick up a boat here one day and use it free of charge.
After some considerations we decided for a 2-person kayak. We have only been paddling once with a canadier and were quite curious whether our forces bundled for the tour would be enough, because how far away the water lily paradise would be – we did not know.
Our paddling first began with a short briefing. How do I hold the paddle best, what to pay attention to during the trip and especially where to go to the water lily paradise. Then we stowed the cell phones and keys in a small waterproof barrel and put them in a small storage space in the boat.
Then it was time to get in – push from the shore – paddle. Always nice and alternately pull the paddle through the water: right, left, right, left,… So now and then drift and just enjoy. What a heavenly calm on the lake! I admit, if my upper arm muscles hadn’t started to rebel after far too short a time, I could imagine doing a longer tour with the kayak. But the advantage of this experience – my training plan must change, only running is not enough!
The trip to the water lily paradise and back can be easily realized in 2 hours, even for inexperienced paddlers like us it is well doable and we could still paddle in peace on the lake other places at the end.
Yes, and the water lily paradise – it is already worth seeing. During our summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District, the water lilies bloomed beautifully, insects flew around the flowers – beautiful!!!
I was somewhat appalled by the behavior of other paddlers. They drove with their boat into the water lily fields. From the Berlin area I know that this is prohibited and honestly I can not understand how you have to damage the plants with the boats so. Even if you stay in the open water, you can still take great photos without damaging nature.
After our short paddling experience in the Mecklenburg Lake District, I have decided that we will repeat this. A slightly longer tour during another summer vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District, with a return transport to the starting point. Time for a picnic on the shore and perhaps a swim break should be – yes and then leisurely explore the lake landscape from the water. That is pure time out!
Ride the motorboat across the lake
Fancy a leisurely boat trip? The Marina Granzow is located on the Granzower See directly in the vacation park Mirow. We rented one of the license-free motor boats for a short trip across the Granzower See to Mirow. Depending on availability, you can rent different boats directly from the harbor master.
After a short briefing, Patrick skilfully cast off from the jetty. Good thing he used to motorboat a lot and it’s like riding a bike, you don’t unlearn it. But even without previous experience, motor boating is really easy. The boats do not go so fast and can be steered well.
First we drove around a bit on the Granzower See and enjoyed the view from the lake to the shore. I am always thrilled by the small boathouses, some of which have been converted into vacation homes.
Through a channel you can continue to Lake Mirow. For the return trip you do not have to pay attention to the traffic sign “Motor prohibited” with the boat of the Marina Granzow. Residents and guests of the marina are allowed to use the canal.
At the end of the canal you reach the Mirower See. By motorboat we went to the Mirow castle. From the water you have a beautiful view of the Mirower church.
The sun was starting to set, so we made our way back to the marina. The reflections on the water are just beautiful and I could have enjoyed the view for hours.
By steamer across 16 lakes
Much more relaxed than with the paddle boat, you can discover the Mecklenburg Lake District from the steamer. For me, it was the first steamboat trip this year and steam on! For us, a tour with the ship of the “Blue-White Fleet” had been organized over 16 lakes to Rheinsberg.
The trip starts at 10 am at the pier in Mirow. We have informed ourselves in advance about the duration and the schedule and made a decision for us. I drove the three hours to Rheinsberg without Patrick. He chose the much shorter land route and waited for me there. In Rheinsberg, the ship has a two-hour stopover – a bit too short for me to be able to discover the city at my leisure. So I did not go on board after two hours and drove the three hours back, but drove back to Mirow with Patrick in the car after the city tour, about which I wrote in the article “Half-day trip to Rheinsberg”. There the ship arrived then at 18 o’clock again. Our variant has of course only been possible because one of us has waived the steamer ride.
The trip by steamer started in Mirower See (1st lake) and ended in Grienerickersee (16th lake). Which lakes we passed through – I don’t remember, they all looked quite similar and offered a beautiful view of the nature of the lake district. Through three locks we went, which was really quite interesting. Also, the dosed information that the captain gave in between about the lake or some towns on the edge of the lake, made the trip a little more varied.
I have to admit, I really enjoyed the ride. The weather was gorgeous, the sun was shining on deck and made the water glisten. Seeing the landscape from the water was a pleasure, you can relax and let the world drift by.
But I was also happy to discover Rheinsberg Castle from the water after three hours and to be able to move around a bit on land.
We had a wonderful week at Ferienpark Mirow.
