Our days in Athens have taken us to various restaurants and cafes in the city. From savory food to sweet seduction, we present our discoveries to eat cheap in Athens.
It was important to us during our stay in Athens that we find reasonably priced restaurants that are not in the middle of the “tourist catchment area”, but still easily accessible. And for those who like to shop fresh and cook for themselves, we took a look at the Athens Central Market.
Varvarkeios the Athens Central Market
What could be better than strolling through a market and discovering the regional foods of the region.
The central market of Athens is located in the middle of the city and is divided into two areas, a large indoor market and outdoor stalls.
In the outdoor area, which is located on the opposite side of the street from the hall, you can buy mainly nuts, dried fruits, fruits, vegetables, flowers and household goods. Some of the stalls are located in small huts, others are mobile and “wander” during the day sometimes to another location.
In the large market hall it is quite loud. The merchants loudly advertise their goods, freely according to the motto, who shouts loudly sells a lot! Even if this reminds a little of an oriental market, there is no trading here. The prices are fixed and the traders do not negotiate. It is also not seen with pleasure, if the commodity is touched. But every now and then, a merchant hands over a tasting morsel over the table.
In the hall you can buy mainly cheese, fish and meat. The stalls are arranged according to “themes” in certain areas of the hall. For example, huge beef and pork halves hang in one aisle, chickens can be heard clucking in the next aisle, and where the floor gets wet, ice melts from where huge squid and other freshly caught fish are sold.
If you get hungry at the sight of such delicious products, you can eat something in the small cafes in the market hall.
The market is open from Monday to Saturday. It is advisable to go there as early as possible, when everything is still nice and clean and fresh.

P.S restaurant, Greek dinner, great prices
Near our hotel we were on the first evening in Athens in search of “typical” Greek food. We found a restaurant directly on a main street with a small outdoor terrace. Here we could sit undisturbed and watch the hustle and bustle on the street.
We were served very friendly in a mix of Greek and English. To our great surprise, the prices were very reasonable and so we suspected rather small portions. When the food was on the table, we were very surprised. The meat platter for one person (under the meat are fries) was so rich that we had big problems to eat up. I had ordered a Greek salad, which was completely sufficient for me in terms of quantity. We drank a Greek beer. This had a light Pils taste and was wonderfully drinkable.

Bread Factory
The Bread Factory is a chain bakery that we saw in several locations is the city. The location we visited is right next to a large square and is supposedly open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether this is really true, I don’t know.
In any case, the bakery offers not only bread and cakes. Here you can also get small hot meals.
We were there to eat cake and the choice was really not easy. The little cakes looked just too good and the prices were really very fair. We finally decided on a creamy fruity and a creamy chocolaty version. Both were super tasty, very sweet and tasted fantastic.

Diplo Café
During the city walk we passed a café that attracted us almost magically. I could almost hear the coffee and cool drinks calling for us and so we went into the guest room.
Here it is super cozy. On two floors you can sit and relax comfortably on sofas, in armchairs or also at tables. The staff was very nice and we could communicate in English.
I could not resist and ordered an apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. A dream! The ice cream tasted really good vanilla and the apple strudel was homemade. I liked it!

Balkan Restaurant
It doesn’t always have to be Greek! We felt like eating something different and so we went to the Bulgarian Balkan Restaurant.
Admittedly, communication was difficult, but it worked with hands and feet. You could already tell we had arrived in a side street away from the tourist flow. Here you can eat really cheap in Athens.
We could choose whether we preferred to sit in the cozy restaurant or on the small covered terrace. It was still quite empty, but so from 6 pm came more and more guests.
The food was hearty, good and very rich. In addition, a cool Greek beer and the evening could end in peace.
