For most holidaymakers, Portugal is associated with wine. But there is also very good Portuguese beer and the craft beer scene in Lisbon has developed steadily in recent years. We tested craft beer in Lisbon on a pub crawl.
Cerveja Canil Baixa – Discover Lisbon Beer
In a side street is the Cerveja Canil Baixa. Even outside the pub, Portuguese and city visitors stand together and chat over a beer. The relaxed atmosphere carries over into the modern pub.
We looked for a place at the bar and enthusiastically discovered the countless taps for the different types of beer. If I counted correctly, there were 32 taps from which the beer flowed in streams. The beers on offer ranged from Brew Dog, some Portuguese beers and the house brand Canil.
Our first choice was a Canil Red Ale and Canil Imperial IPA. Both beers were very tasty and drinkable. My Red Ale just flowed down my throat, a wonderful taste.
The second beer was a Canil Weiss with a light taste of melon and basil and a Canil Session IPA.
Those who need a base before beer will also find burgers and other smaller dishes on the menu.

Delirium Café Lisboa
Following a tip from the internet, we went to the Delirium Café Lisboa. You should get good beer here.
It was very noisy when we got there and we already had problems understanding the young waitresses. We were assigned two bar stools at a beer barrel and shown a QR code for the menu. Then nothing happened for quite a while until we could make ourselves heard and order.
Unfortunately, there was no beer from Portugal on site. We decided to try the Bah! brand beer. The beer comes from Brazil and was rather too bland and neutral for our taste. Too bad, the Bah! American APA and the Bah! American Wheat actually looked quite promising in the glass.
Since we couldn’t talk to each other reasonably in the noise, our stay was quite short and we decided to drink our next Lisbon beer somewhere else.

Duque Brewpub
Duque opened in Lisbon in 2016 and was one of the first breweries in the city at the time. Every month, 3 x 250 litres are brewed in the tanks on site. A total of 7 different beers are offered.
There are many steps leading up from the central downtown area to the brewpub. You can sit at some tables inside or directly on chairs on the stairs. You can get your beer at the counter.
We chose a Duque Albino and a Duque Sourreal. The Albino is a white sout with a light taste of coffee and cocoa. The Sourreal lives up to its name. It really is a sour beer, wonderfully refreshing and great for summer.
We felt very comfortable and enjoyed the atmosphere on the street.

The Queen Ale – Lissabon Craft Beer Bar
It went from the touristy city centre up the hill to a residential area where Portuguese people are more likely to be out and about, not tourists.
Queen Ale is a really cool craft beer bar with a mixed crowd. There’s the elderly housewife in her apron, drinking a coffee next to the student enjoying a Portuguese beer.
After we had made ourselves comfortable in a seating area, it was time to make a beer selection. Besides local beers, there were also three “foreign” beers on offer.
The first choice was a “Little Rain Hazienda IPA” from Spain and the Dois Cervos Creature from Portugal. Both beers had a very pleasant taste and the slight bitterness came through well. Next we drank a Letra Red Ale and a Dois Corvos Weekend Hazienda IPA. These beers were also excellent and were just the right way to end the day.
