Brauhaus Ernst August – where you drink Hanöversch

If you’re in Hannover, you should also drink Hanöversch – we definitely think so. So we went to the Brauhaus Ernst August to drink beer from Hannover and have a nice evening.

Brauhaus Ernst August has been around since 1986. The small family-run pub brewery has since developed into a successful brewing concept with an annual brewing volume of 600,00 litres. Today, guests come from all over the world to drink Hanöversch.

It all started in a former petrol station where Rainer Aulich held his opening party for the brewery. The beer must have flowed in streams from the tap at the party and the beer was a great success. The people of Hannover loved the beer and long queues often formed in front of the pub, which was still somewhat smaller at the time.

Brauerei Ernst August

In 1995, the guest room and the brewery were enlarged. Events are held regularly and anyone who would like to eat here and, above all, drink Hanöversch, should book a table.

A table was reserved for us and so we could look forward to a good beer and hearty brewery food. The dining room is quite large and furnished with larger tables and benches. When we visited, there were almost only groups there and the atmosphere was accordingly boisterous. I particularly like the view of the brew kettles, which gives the room a rustic touch.

The meal

A hearty and more than abundant meal awaited us. The Brauhaus Vesper consisted of air-dried country ham, roast beef, Kassler cold cuts, homemade minced pork, coarse farmer’s sausage, spicy mountain cheese, cornichons, butter, crackling lard, remoulade and bread. One portion alone would have been enough for both of us. The plate was abundantly filled and the products really good. My favourites were the mountain cheese and the mince – with the great bread, a treat for me.

Essen im Brauhaus Ernst August

Beer from Hanovern

Of course, our visit was also about the house beer. We were very curious about that.

The beer specialities are brewed from raw materials in organic quality and of course according to the German Purity Law. The beer is natural and freshly tapped. Depending on the season, special beers such as Maibock are offered.

Hanöversch Pilsener

The Pilsner is the first beer that was produced in the brewery and is still brewed today. A beer with a beautiful golden yellow colour and a nice foam awaited us. The naturally cloudy Hanöversch has an alcohol content of 4.8% and an original wort of 13.5%. I think it tastes wonderfully drinkable and full-bodied, not too harsh – just the way a good Pilsner should taste.

Hanöversch Bernstein (amber)

The amber is also one of the Ernst August Brewery’s regular offerings. Selected caramel malts give the beer an orange-golden colour and an inimitable taste. The beer is naturally cloudy with a light beige foam. You can taste a slight malt flavour, but it is not dominant. The alcohol content is 5.2% with an original wort of 12.5%.

Maibock

During our visit, we had the seasonal Maibock. For this beer, the brewer uses two barley malts and of course hops. The Maibock matures a little longer and the malt flavour comes out stronger. The strong beer tastes stronger as a result. The alcohol content is 6.5%. I liked the beer very much.
