There are not only sheep on Texel, beer is also brewed on Texel – and really well. Texelse Bierbrouwerij has been brewing special beers that accurately describe life on the island since 1999.
There is, for example, the Skuumkoppe, reminiscent of the white whitecaps on the waves, or the Texels Goudkoppe, whose golden colour is reminiscent of the sunsets on the island.
The Texelse Bierbrouwerij is located in the building of the former dairy of Oudeschild. Cheese used to be made here, then the building stood unused on the meadow for a while until Harry (an amateur brewer) was “banished” there by his wife. She had found his attempts at brewing at home too degenerate and in the unused building Harry had enough space. Production grew, the taste was moderate.
At some point, new operators took over the brewery and hired a Bavarian brewer. He hit the taste buds of the islanders and an island beer was created in the Texelse Bierbrouwerij. In the meantime, production has grown so much that additional production and storage space is needed.
Every year, many visitors come to Texelse Bierbrouwerij for a tour of the brewery or a visit to the beer garden, so it’s no surprise that there is a huge car park in front of the door and almost as many “bicycle parking spaces”. My tip, don’t come by car if you want to test the drinkable beer extensively. With 12 different varieties produced in the brewery, testing can take a little longer and the beer garden is really great for a break on the island.
The brewing process
During our visit in autumn 2021, a guided tour of the brewery was only possible to a very limited extent. Unfortunately, we were denied a view of the often beautiful copper kettles. But we were given a very detailed explanation of how Texels Speciaalbier is made, with the help of diagrams.
The process is of course no different from the usual way beer is brewed, very simplified from: Malting, crushing malt, preparing and filtering the mash, adding hops and heating, bottling, drinking. What makes the beer unique is that many raw materials come from the region. For example, the water is fetched from the mainland through a hose laid in the tidal flats. The required wheat or barley (depending on the type of beer) comes directly from the island. It is brought to the mainland for the first processing steps (the malting plant is in Belgium) and then further processed on the island. The required yeast strain is also only available on the island. The hops are sourced from different growing regions, for example from Germany.
We were able to take a look at the brewery’s bottling line. Here they fill about 8000 bottles per hour and 400 barrels with beer every day. A new addition to the range is beer in cans. About 80% of the production is sold on the Dutch mainland.
What beers are available from Texelse Bierbrouwerij?
The brewery brews 12 different special beers. We were able to taste some of the beers after the tour.
The beer is brewed with barley from the island and is the brewery’s best seller. The dark wheat beer tastes slightly tart with a hint of caramel. The alcohol content is 6.0%.
The secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle and the beer is unfiltered, with a little yeast, which gives it a special taste.
We took the beer home with us. It was really great and brought the memory of Texel into our living room.
Texels „Overzee IPA“
A great fresh and above all fruity IPA with a typical taste. Here the brewer uses American hop varieties and barley from Texel – a wonderful tart and slightly bitter taste to enjoy. The alcohol content is 6.0%.
Texels „Skiller wit“
Texel’s Skiller Wit is a wheat beer that goes wonderfully with warm summer days. The beer is very cloudy and shines in a lighter golden yellow with a creamy head. It has a light tart flavour of citrus and herbs and an alcohol content of 5.0%.
We drank the beer during a visit to a restaurant and it tasted excellent.
The brewer has added a hint of sea fennel to the special beer with 5.0% alcohol content, creating a distinctive taste.
The Tripel is inspired by the beers from Belgian abbeys. With an alcohol content of 8.5%, the pale stout is almost the brewery’s strongest beer.
A ruby-red special beer that tastes quite malty and hoppy. The alcohol content is 5.5%.
Golden yellow and unfiltered with 6% alcohol is the Goudkoppe, another special beer from Texelse Bierbrouwerij. This beer is beautifully tangy, it tastes really fresh and invigorating. It is also visually attractive: amber-coloured, unfiltered and an appealing head.
A dark speciality beer with a full-bodied taste is Texels Dubbel.
The autumnal bock beer has an alcohol content of 7%. Texels Boch is unfiltered and tastes of caramel. The brewer has used three different caramel malts for this beer. So you get a dark red, yeasty cloudy beer with a firm head in the glass.
The Noorderwiend Spezialbier is made for cold winter days. The 7.5% will quickly warm your heart and the tart, fruity taste is just perfect.
Texelse Bierbrouwerij’s strongest special beer is the Sturmbock with 10% alcohol content. The unfiltered beer is strong and slightly sweet. A tip, the beer lasts a very long time and still tastes good after a few years. It changes its flavour and then tastes similar to a port wine.
With this beer, the brewery brings spring into the glass. A flowery flavour that suits the seasonal beer exceptionally well.
